I'm looking for a good boost to tighten up the bottom end of my 5150 as well as a noisegate, but I can only afford around £100 give or take each way.

Any ideas?

How about a used Boss NS2 and a used Maxon OD808? i own both and think they are great-i think you should definitely go used and get decent pedals that way

How does the Maxon compare to the TS9?

Plenty of videos comparing each on youtube, I think the difference between them was either slightly different chip or 2 of the resistors were changed, can't remember which but the 808 seems to be the one most people go for. For tightening a 5150 I would turn the gain knob all the way down and max out the volume, tone to taste

If you wanted a cheaper TS clone there is always the digitech bad monkey

Ive never tried a TS9 but i love the Maxon-it keeps the amps soul and integrity intact yet adds a mid boost that tightens up the bottom end. Remember that when you boost you dont need as much gain on the amp as you did before.
And yes on the maxon i turn the overdrive knob all the way down and keep the balance knob around 2-3oclock. tone 12o'clock.
Good luck!

The fulltone OCD V3 is my preferred boost for metal. It can go a lot tighter than the tubescreamers etc and I find the tone and the places it cuts & boosts to be more suitable for metal.

The tone control is also a lot more useful imho

Or, you could get a Goost off ToeKnee.

I've used both a Boss SD-1 and a Joyo Vintage OD with my 5150 and been pretty pleased with how both sounded, although if I had to pick one it'd probably be the Joyo – it comes out a little cleaner and snappier, to my ears. (As I understand it, the Joyo uses the same chip as the old Ibanez TS pedals.) But I'd say either could be a good shout if you're watching the pennies.
