I've got an audition!
« on: July 14, 2012, 05:11:35 PM »
I've been looking to join a band for a while now after being out of the gigging circuit for quite a while (about 6 years now) and I've finally been asked for an audition on monday night for a function band in my local area.

From what the Keyboard player has told me, the two vocalists have sung in the We Will Rock You show and the other guys are great players with lots of experience behind them.

I myself do have experience but only with the metal side of music. I'm a pretty open minded person when it comes to music (metal was my first love) but I've never really gone out of my way to learn something I've never heard before (except for when I studied music at college).

I've got 4 songs that I need to learn

*Hot Stuff - Donna Summer
*Have I Told You Lately - Van Morrison
*Living On A Prayer - Bon Jovi
*Sex On Fire - Kings Of Leon

I have 3 out of the 4 songs nearly nailed but I'm stuggling with Have I Told You Lately. The recording is so layered with keys and other instruments that the guitar is hard to hear. So I have a question.

Should I learn the basic harmony of the song and try to tart it up as best I can so that it sounds at least convincing?

I've never been through an audition process before so I'm a little nervous so I'd thought I could use some tips too.

Thanks guys

have you looked to see if there are any guitar pro tabs for the song?

If there are it will help you to pick the parts out well you wont have to they'll be tabbed.

You can use tuxguitar which is free to open guitar pro tabs.

in regards to the audition my best advice is to just be yourself and get on with things and just play!

A great chance Steve !  :)

I used to play in a  7 piece function band -  and as part of that had to ( briefly) understudy to an 'official' session player,  before going to Germany for a week in the 'Orchestra Pit' of a local theatre group, to do 'Joseph's Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat'.   The biggest things I learned, were that the 'professionals'  actually play far less than we guitarists would usually be tempted to do. More a job of 'keeping out of the way'  of the Bass Player and Keyboards - whilst injecting tasty fills based on the underlying harmony.

At audition, however - I appreciate that the opposite may be true- and they may want you to play your Ar*e off / spin all the plates at once -  just to see your breadth of skills and ( perhaps more importantly ) your ability to show 'grace under fire' .    I assume the common thread between audition playing - and requirements for the actual show would be ( as you mentioned ) that you at least demonstrate that you understand the direction of the melody,  and where you could tastefully assist the Harmony.   In practice, you will of course be agreeing with the Keyboards and Bass player, how to 'Carve up' the parts of the song(s) between you - but just now (at audition ) I presume they want to see a 'Stunt guitarist' , not flash, just relaxed and reasonably confident.

The big one is of course that they want to work with you as a person - and under pressure at the rehersal , you still seem like the sort of 'Decent chap' who they could mould later.  The busiest session / function / anything Bass player I used to know, was not a 'clever' player, but he always came across as a mellow guy, who took directions well - and always turned up well rehearsed.  The later may seem obvious, but flash players could sometimes be inconsistent band members.

Forgive the many lines of the 'bloody obvious' - but ( subject to you checking with them ) I suspect they will be more impressed by a tastefully artful 'bit' player - than an absolutely stunning 'One man show'.

Play less, know where that sound like 'More' - and listen like crazy. I remember the 'Blagger' that I understudied to - turning up at the main dress rehersal having not even remembered the sheet music / score - for a fully orchestrated / conducted show.  He just turned to me and ( tugging on his ear lobes ) said " Well, I guess we'll have to use THESE tonight " . The Conductor thought he was great - and he set an amazingly low standard - that was very hard to follow.

That may have been the (usual ) ramble, but I hope it at least pivoted on a few helpful points , that further checking with the 'Employers' and subsequent posts then start to reveal interim answers.

In any case , visibly enjoy the whole thing ; I sense you will be well recieved and are certainly 'well educated' by your Music College experience.  :)

All the best !  :D

Do any of those songs have solos in ? I'm guessing that they'll want to know if you can fit in and complement the other instruments and whether you can take a solo when needed. If you're not sure what they want you to do - ask them. If the Van Morrison song is mainly keys just learn the melody and find some 2 and 3 note chords that will accompany it. And make sure you can play all the songs in your sleep.

My band plays the Van Morrison song on occasion and it isn't that complicated from a chord point of view. I would suggest listening to a few versions to get an idea of where it all goes and you will have the lay of the land so to speak. I think that they will be wanting to see how well you play overall but will want to see how you fit in-all pretty obvious I know.
Best of luck with it and I hope it is what you want it to be.

Good luck :D

I can only echo what others have said (esp FF) - I'd want players who've got the chops but who are completely subservient to "the song". For a guitarist this means DO NOT get in the way of the bass, drums and, especially, the "vocal" - support them instead.

No-one in the ensemble (including the singers!!) should ever consider themselves bigger than the song. When the guitar riff is the "vocal" (eg intro to Living on a Prayer), then you're in the spotlight, when the singing starts you're just part of the groove.

Really hope it goes well (and I mean you liking them as well as them liking you!). :D

good luck!

from all that, i would be most worried about 'hot stuff' - got to be groovy /and/ tight on that one. it can be hard for me to get 'in the pocket' on tracks like that

Good luck Steve! I play in my 7-head coverband a lot of that stuff. Sometimes there are layers of guitars in a song and I pick the dominate one, with the keylines of the song. I too have difficulties hearing 'hidden' parts. I try to make an arrangement that fits the song. Nearly nobody in the audience will hear if I'm playing the original 'hidden' version or my own adapted one.

Yep. It's only the "lead" riffs etc, the hooks, that matter. And, in fact, even then you can get away with playing your own version as long as it gives off the right vibe.

It's only the guitarists and other nit-pickers in the audience who'll notice and come up to you afterwards with "do you know you're playing the riff wrong?" (I've even had people say that to me about the riffs in my own songs!!)

Choose from the following for a response:

"Oh really? Thankyou, how do you play it?"

"Yes I know, the original version is a bit sh1t isn't it?"

"Very probably, I'm playing it from memory, I really couldn't be @rsed to get the record out and listen to it"

"That's nice, why don't you go and talk to the bassist about it? He gives a sh1t, sorry, cares about that sort of thing..." (this one works really well if the bassist doesn't give a sh1t and hates talking to the "muso" punters )

ANYWAY - was it last night? How did it go?

EDIT: And, er, yes, I have been known to go up to a guitarist and say "do you know you're playing it wrong?"   (but, in my defence, he had been doing it to me for sometime...)

Well I done the audition last night and I think it went well. they seemed impressed and i think i nailed most of the songs. "Have i told you lately" could of been better but overall it went well.

Yes, do let us know the outcome.  :)

Meanwhile,  you have achieved a lot in learning so much stuff outside of your usual style(s) , going in and doing the business some six years after you last had your 'stage legs' on - and doing it all to such a pleasing degree that the whole thing felt to have gone well.   Great work !  8)

Well it turns out I didn't get the gig. Apparently it was a very hard decision but they went with the other guy for a few reasons (one of the being that he's a friend of the drummer). On a good note the keyboard player said that considering I only had 3 days notice to learn 4 new songs and be as well prepared as I was, they were 'amazed' by their words. He said that I was the better player (but the other reasons helped the other guy) and that I should really get out and play 'because players like you don't come around often'.

So I learnt a lot from the audition and I know I'm on the right track.

Sorry you didn't get the gig, but it sounds like you did a great job  :)
