Sultans of Swing done! Which song to learn next?
« on: July 18, 2012, 10:22:53 PM »
Hi folks,

Not really an off topic post, but this seemed the best place to put it...

...I am a bedroom guitarist who as the GAS at bay for a bit, so shock horror am actually learning to play better!

I have just managed to master Sultans of Swing (including the famous widdly bit at the end) which I am very very pleased with, I can play a famous solo! (You don't realise how big a deal this was for me, I've been playing guitar on and off (mainly off) for 6 years, and finally I can do it!)

But now I need a next project song to learn and I am stumped...

Other Dire Straits stuff seems a bit too advanced at the moment (Tunnel of love etc), and I dont want a straightfoward song that is just playing the same riffs over an over again (Chord sequence, Chorus, Chord Sequence etc...) I would prefer a song with lots of little fills. I think what I am trying to say is one that is interesting and fun to play.

Any type of music considered!

What is your most fun track to play?

How about "The Loner" by Gary Moore. Great song to really "feel" what you're playing.

This. Or Nighttrain by guns n roses. That song is, IMO, slash's greatest show of ability as a lead guitarist. Absolutely stunning leads.

If you're on a Knopfler thang at the moment then why not try Money for Nothing?
Same kind of pickin' vibe, but with a totally different sound

Chili Peppers - Under the Bridge

Ah, yes. There's no such thing as too much of the Chili Peppers. John's playing on Blood Sugar Sex Magik was incredible. By far my all time favourite album.

And again, as the post above me said, money for nothing is a really nice riff.

Also readymade by RHCP.

How about Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan- two lovely solos plus a host of little fills. Larry Carlton too. Plus you could learn the chords too. It was one that I wanted to learn for years and I finally got around to it. I never normally learn solos a) because I am not a great lead guitarist and b) I don't see the need but I decided I liked this one so much that I'd challenge myself. Thinking about it, I am out of practice (not having much call for it) so I need to go back to the fretting board.

Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love

It's not quite such a big project to take on, but there is some stunning guitaring on it, deceptively simple, which I've always kind of bracketed with what happens in Sultans.

Thank you for all the suggestions folks, going to take a trip to youtube to listen to them all and select the next project!
Is it just me that regardless of difficultly level, easy or hard, some songs are just lots more fun to play than others?

Got alot of satisfaction from mastering sultans, and previously have really enjoyed "highway to hell" and "Coming back to life"...

I just really like the songs where whilst playing them I think "I am really glad I can play guitar!"

Sorry for the sickly sweet feelgood message, I'm just having a good day! :headphones1:
