I feel a little GAS coming up. I feel strangely attracted by a Sunn Mustang. Most of the reviews I read were very positive. Also, my mate's brother has one. My mate says it's actually quite a good guitar. At least it seems to be quite a caracter guitar. You can pick 'em up at bargain prices. Some even compare it to 'lost collectable gems'.

Has anyone had any experience with these guitars? Any good? Pimpable?

Oh Ratty...You have bought a tear of nostalgic joy to my eye......

My first guitar was a Sunn Mustang and at the time I think that it might have been quite an old one. I kept that guitar for many years whilst also having a N2 and some other Washburn of some Superstrat style( Probably about £500 quids worth) and this was in about '94 but the Sunn was clearly the best. I do belive if you scour these very forums you might find a post of mine with regards to that very guitar. I did pimp it and it pimped amazingly well! The one that I had was originally H.S.S ,Black with a white scratchplate. After I was finished it had a S$ym**r duncan in the bridge, cant remeber which one exactly but used it cost me £75, I replaced the tuners with locking machine heads , the remaining pick-ups from a set of Fender Texas specials in the mid and neck and finished off with a mirrored scratchplate...My first true love and I tell you it rocked and played like a mother!!!!!! Some of my mates were superb guitarists and they all loved it to pieces. Then I had to sell it

If you find one please tell me if you decide not to buy for I will snap it up for the right price.

Great story Donovan. There's a couple of them for sale here in Holland. All of them are a little too far away to actually try them first but can be delivered. There's a very nice vintage white one and some all black ones. The white one is slightly more expensive.

Have you got a headstock picture of the white one? How much is it? I think that would probably be the same model as the one I had.

There's no picture of the headstock. It's more Fendery looking than the black one. The white one is 175 euro's, the black one 150. That's around the 100 quid mark.

My first guitar was a sunn mustang too, and it killed!! Well, once the stock ceramic pickups were ripped out and replaced with something a little more pokey (to my shame, SD quarter pounders!!), I sanded the lacquer off the neck, took off the string trees and blocked the trem off with a big chunk of mahogany skirting board. Then it was a beast!! It's gathering dust at the moment, as I'm too in love with me eggle, but theres an Inkling towards dusting it off as a project. 3-Pig90 strat clone anyone??
With Bryan May switching and a hardtail?

Well, I'm selling some guitar parts that I have lying around to finance the project. The black one is begging for a Sinner isn't it? Maybe combine the Sinner with Apaches.

RATROD!!! I have been doing a little research on the Sunn Mustangs and it look to me like 99% of people are convinced that these boys are genuine strats made by Fender in India. I have not read a bad word about them BUT it has to be the right ones! The ones with the gold and black Sunn Mustang logo are the old good ones and the black one shown in your picture are the ones that aren't so hot. I will be getting one in the next couple of days and I am going to relive my youth by doing a super silly, yet tastefull restoration job. I will post pics and keep you updated. :D
Some of the comments on harmoney central are crazy about these guitars, People with Genuine Strats and Gibbos still choose these over them!! EDIT. Further investigation has lead to one with "By FMIC" on the headstock.FMIC being Fender Music instrument corporation! Cool! It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.

Great info Don. I've also heard that the ones with the Fendery headstocks are the ones to go for. That would mean the white one in this case.

I filled in for a bass player who I later found out didn't exist in a band back in the day, and I used a friends dad's Sunn bass, it sound really cool, they obviously know/knew what they were doing when they put these together as it was a really solid good sounding instrument.
