Liberating, if a little scary
« on: July 23, 2012, 09:10:36 AM »
Handed my resignation in this morning.

For many reasons to be honest, but easily summed up as my sanity and soul.

No job to go to, but a bit saved up. Gonna spend the next 6-12 months playing around with pedals, generally doing some creative stuff. Then look for other work out of IT. If all else fails I'll drive a van. We shall see how the future pans out.

A brave move - and ( in my experience) a good one.   Some things just need to come to an end - and life is too short to live in a perpetual suffocation.  However you end up making a living a year from now,  the interim will surely refresh and inspire you as a human being - and set the scene for a richer life. Meanwhile, enjoy the immediate few months, of doing what you enjoy.  All the very best !  :)

As you know John, I did a similar thing around 12 months ago - life's too short not to enjoy it.

All the very best!

I congratulate you on your move!

I sometimes think about taking a sabbatical myself. But fact I started a new job at the end of last year, and am quite enjoying it so far.

Brave move, and I hope it works out well for you!  :D

Not something I would ever dare to do, I wish I could but I fear I'd never get another job at my age and with my less-than-impressive CV.

Mind you, I could probably sell all my guitars and Warmoth bits and live off the proceeds for a year...

Well, I was trying not to big it up too much!

I've only got a handful of guitars with any real value, the rest of them would go for buttons. But I guess all those necks and bodies might add up to more than I realise!

Given the state of my pension provision, I may need 'em....

I got out of IT four years ago for the sake of my sanity. Didn't want to end up back here.

Reckon I was on my way there. A couple of 1-1's ago with my manager, when discussing courses he suggested I might want to go on an anger management course...

Would you do short IT contracts? As a programmer I quite enjoyed doing 6 weeks in one company, couple of months somewhere else then having a break and sitting round at home til the money dried up. Contracting was far less stressful than full-time IT, you don't get involved in office politics and you're your own man. And the money's a lot better. Just a thought.
