Ready to order BKPs for my Gibson SG
« on: July 27, 2012, 05:55:16 PM »
Hey guys,

I've got the money ready to order some BKs for my Gibson SG Standard. I've got a RS Guitarworks wiring kit on the way too so the pots will be 500k rather than 300k.

I like the tones of The Mars Volta, Incubus, Jack White, King Crimson as well as blues and classic rock. I'd like the set to be versatile and allow good clean tones.

I spoke to Tim about a year ago, and he recommended the Riff Raffs, I just thought it'd be worth checking with you guys to see if there was any good advice :) I'm really close to ordering the Riff Raffs, but just can't quite do it! If they're versatile in an SG, then I think they're the ones for me. The only tones I don't really need are death metal etc.

Thanks for any help you can give :)

RiffRaff are great pickups with superb cleans (specially on the neck and mid positions) and enough bite and punch tightness to handle quite a lot of distortion. Don't let the name fools you, while they can do old AC/DC with the proper guitar, amp and fingers, they are in no way restricted to "this" tone, and will do just anything the early 60s "patent applied" gibby buckers would do. I have them in a semi-hollow and they do wonder for anything from blues to alternative rock. And, yes, they are - of course - perfectly at home in a SG too.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Thanks for the reply BigB, I think i'm going to go for them. I've heard so many good things about them and they seem to be perfect for the SG.

For standard SG wiring, I'm assuming I just want Braided 2 Conductor?

If you're after the canonical SG/humbuckers tones then look no further IMHO - specially if that what Tim said would match your needs.

Yeah after spending a great deal of time looking at the different BKPs I always seem to come back to the Riff Raffs.

Do you know whether I'll need Braided or 4 conductor? That's all I need to know then I'm good to go :)

Riff Raffs all the way for you.

Only get braided if you want to be vintage correct. Otherwise get 4 conductor. It does the same as braided but has the added options of things like out of phase and splits. So get it and if you donīt wanne use it keep the two unneeded wires taped together. But if you one day feel fancy and wanne install a push pull pot or go for Petrucci wiring you have the option.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I have a pair in my Les Paul DC Standard. I like them, they sound they way the classic 490/498 pair should sound like, without all the mud. I would call them the opposite of mules almost, they have both more low end and low mids and at the same time more high end which gives them a very punchy, very rocky sound which i think will fit your sound very well.
Stormy Mondays, Mules, Riff Raffs, '63 Veneer Board Set, BG52s, Emeralds, C-Pig(b), Trilogy(n)

That sounds great to me :) They were dispatched today, so hopefully will have everything set up sooner than I thought. I'd never seen a Les Paul DC until I just looked them up, what are they like? They look awesome!

I would probably pick riff raffs for those bands for any guitar
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

They are very nice, lighter than your average les paul and with better balance too boot. I'd call it a mix of a les paul and an es335, leaning more on the les paul side of things but slightly more warmth and somewhat bigger sounding. And really frickin beautiful! The neck is a mix of a 59 neck and a 60's neck, slightly more bat-y than a 60's but very comfortable. My Dc's nut is pretty poorly cut so i've been meaning to get it served someday, but it still has a decent action and it sounds great now with the riff raffs. :)
