ah right, yeah if you mainly use single coils that makes sense. I generally use humbuckers (though mostly in superstrats or similar).

Me too. The Crawler and VHII in my HSS-strats sound ace on the Rockerverb. With humbucker-loaded mahogany setneckguitars you really need to dial in less bass.

I'm currently running through Eminence Texas Heat and Man-O-War speakers loaded in a cabinet I built from solid sassafras. I went for the Eminence speakers because they're a bit less expensive here in the US than Celestion. I was fairly impressed with the quality and the sound. My first choice has always been Ev 12Ls but they're costly.

I'd get 2 x G12M greenbacks and 2 x Celestion V30s, they combine well together.

not really
they pair well in different cabs/setups
the v30's are way louder and more midrange dominant than the g12m's
they overpower most speakers in the market, unless you pair them with different voiced speakers, like the g12k100 or the g12t75
not that a cab with v30's and greenbacks together sound bad, but you're wasting 70% of the greenback tone, since you won't hear them
a cab with greenbacks and g12t75's would be great, as their voicings fit almost like opposite sex genitals on each other and they have the same sensitivity and magnet weight

first you gotta figure out what kind of speaker you like the most, and then what kind of speakers sound best with your amp

I love the smooth and "small" range of the greenbacks
they are all about crunchy mids, but not honky or aggressive
the vintage 30 has a punchier low end, in your face mids and a bit harsher top
I love them as well, mostly for recording and for some live amps, but others can sound way too honky
for smaller cabs, I love the mesa celestion black shadow (custom variation of the classic lead 80), and it sounds amazing with hot rodded marshalls
lots of low end, strong but smooth top, flat non-scooped mids

higher wattage speakers with flatter or scooped midrange tend to sound better for cleans
the v30 is hard to beat for distorted rhythms and the greenback for fat lead tones

funnily enough, my modded vintage JMP sounds better in person through a stock laney cab (not sure which speakers) than through an expensive mesa 4x12 with v30's (the mesa always wins for recording, though)

Here's what I'd do:

Celestion V30s are recommended and cool. However, I'd save some cash and get two Eminence Governors instead, as they sound more or less like V30s and cost less, and put them in the top slots of the cabinet (the ones that hit the ears). That should give you the most of your investment in most band contexts. The bottom ones I'd probably keep, they might blend nicely, but rather save up for one day getting a top brand 4x12 instead.

Don't think that just because Eminences are cheaper than Celestions they're lower quality - they're not. I bet the distributors play a large role in the price differences.
Eminence makes a whole range of speakers and I could blahblah a lot for ages which ones are also great, but really you can't go wrong with the Governor, Wizard or Swamp Thang from Eminence.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

i didn't notice that at all- the greenback combined with a v30 sounded pretty good, and i wouldn't say either really overpowered the other. the greenback also really toned down the v30, so I wouldn't say it was wasted in that respect.

i tried the greenback with a g12t75 as well, but i can't much remember how that combo sounded. Pretty good, i expect, but i think i probably liked other combos better.

they are high quality, but they don't sound like celestions
I have a governor in a cheap 1x12 and I had at least three v30's in this same cab
the governor sounds absolutely nothing like those
if he's in the US or UK, grabbing a used nicely broken in v30 isn't more expensive than a new governor
I didn't like the governor at all, but the wizard sounds pretty nice with some particular amps

I had a lot of trouble trying to match v30's to other speakers in my 1960A
I ended up taking them out for good, as they overpowered pretty much every speaker in that cab (g12t75, g12m blackbacks, and the ones I still have in it)
now it has 2 x scumback h75's (weber made g12h clones) and 2 x MG music black dogs (brazilian made with same parts as the weber silver bell)
actually they would pair well with the h75's, but they are still a little more dominant

the black dogs sound a lot like the bk pickup model
it's a heavier and louder vintage greenback with a tamed smooth top
it overpowered the blackbacks volume by a large margin, and they still got overpowered by the v30's also by a large margin
the scumbacks are still a little louder and a lot more aggressive, but they blend quite evenly

The speaker combo I use is the Eminence Legend V128 and Swamp Thang (in a Zilla 2x12). Maybe something to look into, since most people tend to overlook Eminence, at least in my experience anyways. I've played covers stuff, to punk, to REALLY heavy metal with these, and never once have I been unhappy with 'em.

maybe it's worse in a 4x12 format, i only tried the combos in a 2x12. :)

Sorry for the hijack but I've been looking into the Emi Legend V128s and GB128s as a combo to go in my Zilla 2x12 Fatboy cab. What amp do you use them with etc?

No problemo! My entire rig is as follows;

Ibanez RGD2127z w/SD Blackouts > ISP Decimator G-string > Blackstar S1-100 > Zilla Fatboy
Loop send > ISP Decimator G-string (same pedal) > Loop return

It sounds positively awesome.

EDIT: If I get chance tomorrow night, I'll try and knock a clip together for you with my amateur mic skills and lack of room treatment. I assume mic'ing the V128 is what you'll want to hear rather than the Swamp Thang

^ might as well keep it in the thread... i have a gb128 and v128 on the way too, if lean actually ever deigns to send them out (i ordered them on sunday and apparently the order is still "processing" :? )

Well, that sucks

yeah i originally bought the texas heat to use on its own, and needed it to be 16 ohm. Then about 2 days later realised the texas heat/swamp thang combo was meant to be really good. so of course that meant i had to buy the swamp thang in 16 ohm, too.
