Hi guys

Basically I have a vision, I currently have a 5150 mark 2 with a 4x12 speaker cab. Anyway I have 2 paths I was going to go down and I would really like some advice.

Path 1: Stay with the 5150, get a hotplate, replace the valves and look at some pedals.

Path 2: sell the 5150, try and get a JCM800, replace valves, also I think you definately need a distorsion pedal with the JCM 800.

My main reason for the change is that I love the British marshall 80s sound and I feel the 5150 is more of a heavy amp more modern sounding. Also I would love to try out some of those keeley distorsion pedals.

My major concern is having 2 channels on JCM 800, I'm not sure if they can do this? I like to play a lot of clean stuff you see.

i haven't tried them, but some of the jcm800's, afaik, were two channel.

I really can't advise- but i suggest you take a look at an engl savage if you can, if you have the cash- it does the modern thing and the marshall-y thing (at least my savage se does)- but of course, if you only want the marshall-y tone, a marshall would be better.

A framus cobra might be worth a look too, from what i hear, but i haven't tried it.

Cheers for the reply I kind of decided to swap amps, now some guy is offering me £450 for a JCM 800 2210 original head in good condition? What do you guys rekon shall I snap his arm off?

I have no idea how much it is worth but I can afford this.

I pain £350 for a 2x12 JCM800 2203 combo from 1987, and everyone seemed to think that was a damn good price - I remember Hayden saying something like £150 cheaper than the going rate.

With any tube amps you'd get better results if you had a hotplate or attenuator.
What I suggest you do is first get the hotplate with the 5150, a Boss SD1 or SD pickup booster to boost it for not too much, and THEN if you don't like it, maybe change the preamp tubes. Then if still you don't fancy it, get the JCM800. You'll use the hotplate and SD1 for it anyway.

Nah I've decided to take this guy up on his offer for the JCM800 2210, its a very good deal I think also pretty much all my fave guitarists have used this amp at some point.

The JCM is a classic hard rock/metal head.

I had a 2205 for many years before I got my Splawn Quick Rod.
