ESP flying v... Looking to demud

I have a rather old ESP v which is fairly dark sounding. All mahogany set neck, 24 3/4" scale. Tuned to B.

Any recommendations?

Yeah, it really depends on what you play and what you play through. Although I'm guessing you won't be playing blues or classic rock tuned to B!

I use a 6505 head and marshall cabs.

It currently has a Duncan distortion in the bridge and a 59 in the neck. Problem is its really dark and doesn't really project.

1 Fit an earvana compensated tuning nut - will add a lot of clarity to all your chording and improve intonation and being tuned as low as you are you need al the help available
2) change pots to BKP 550k pots

I'd email the guys at BKP about it.   But I'd say an Aftermath, based upon advice they have given me in the past.

I have 7 string V but its maple neck through, mahogany body, tuned to B.  I jumped in head first on a ceramic warpig and it didn't work.  Too much bass.  I didn't email them first which was my mistake as they recommended an Aftermath which has good bass response.  I ended up with SD blackouts in it and never go to try the Aftermath.

I'd go holydiver in a heart beat.  This was was recommended by Tim for my Ibanez RGD when I was looking for that deep carcass sound.  I'll tell, he hit the nail on the head.  When I play it, near a grave yard, the dead awake and there are zombies everywhere.

An RGD is a very different sounding guitar from an ESP V, almost on opposite ends of the tonal spectrum. I can almost say with certainty that was works great in one guitar will not work in the other.

With the ESP, all the brighter voiced contemporary ones should work, aka Miracle Man, Painkiller, Aftermath and Cold Sweat. I would naturally advise against the fatter sounding ones, the Holy Diver, Warpig and probably the Nailbomb as well (its top end isn't the brightest).

I myself are only familiar with the Miracle Man, Holy Diver and Nailbomb, and from those I'd go with the Miracle Man without thinking twice.

I think the miracle man could get you into the tonal realm you are wanting especially as you have a 6505.

Is yours one of the older v350s that are mahogany or one of the RR type ones that are basswood/alder?

The miracle man works amazingly across all of the above woods in my experience so I can't see you have any issues

It's an old gibson v shaped one I bought in 1999 used. It used to have DiMarzios of unknown type and I installed the Duncans in it years back after swapping them out of another guitar. They're too dark though.

It's a tune o matic bridge. It plays seriously nice, but it's impossible to get the mix of chunky focused rhythm tones and a good lead tone. Pinch harmonics are a no go.

Basically, I'm thinking EMG, but as 11 out of 17 guitars have EMGs, I'd rather give BKP a try :).

Ahh I believe those classic shaped ones had a few alder & basswood models. All really nice. I've been trying to find one for a while now.

For what you want and the fact that you like EMGS I would definitely check out the miracle man.

It will retain the aggression & core tone that you are used to but with a bit more punch in the lower mids.

Yeah the EMG likeness definitely points towards the MM.

I put nailbombs in my ESP LTD EC-401 at Tim's suggestion and it sounds fantastic.
