Mule, Les Paul, and Marshall: Classic rock (Europe content)
« on: August 23, 2012, 11:55:56 AM »
Here are two clips of Mules into a cranked Marshall. I think this is the sound these pickups are built for, although they can do a huge range of things.

I played rhythm guitars on a few tracks on the last Kee Marcello album, Redux: Europe. It was an album of remakes of Europe tunes in a heavier style, plus one new song. Kee was the guitarist in Europe from 1986-1993.

I thought you'd like to hear some of the raw guitar takes, because they give a pretty clear idea of the pickup's tone. The 2061X is a very dynamic amp with only medium amounts of gain, so you can hear the character of the pickup clearly.

Signal path:

Les Paul with Mules (I used the bridge pickup on these recordings) -> Marshall 2061X fully cranked -> Zilla Vintage 30 cab -> close-mic'ed with an SM58.

That's it. There's no EQ, reverb, or other post-processing on these clips; this is the completely raw tone. They're double tracked and panned hard left and right, so if you want to hear a single guitar, just adjust your speaker balance.

That's rock n roll right there. Killer tracks and killer tone.

Cheers guys. I wish I could find a way to capture the sound in the room more accurately. I like the tone on these clips, but the sound coming out of the amp was even better – it had more depth and warmth which you don't really hear on this recording.

Sounds super! What recording set up you using that would be the main factor in capturing the sound as accurately as possible.

I'm close mic'ing the cab into an Apogee Duet interface, straight into Logic.

I've experimented with a condenser mic, but I was surprised to find it didn't sound as much different from the dynamic mic as I expected. I'll definitely mess around a bit with mic placement, but it's a known thing – a mic'ed up cab can sound great, and sit really well in a mix, but it doesn't sound the same as the amp in a room.
