my bernie rico hesperian 7 is a light weight mahogany 7 with a floyd rose with a bolt on neck "maple and ebony" and i went the holy diver route and couldn't be happier. if its a heavier warmer guitar especially neck through or set neck i would use a black dog. Allot of people may recommend with rebel yell but its a much much leaner pickup and is very compressed even when you lower it quite a bit. It lacks the balls of the two pickups i mentioned.

My RYs are in an all mahogany thick bodied guitar and their brightness works very well with the inherent darkness of the guitar. I don't understand the remark about lack of balls, they have it in spades. Listen to the demo by Steve Stevens. They are at the lower output end of the contemporary range and strike a great balance between classic rock sounds and metal tones. If you're more of a metal player in general you might prefer the higher output pups.

From what I've read I'd be a little dubious about either the HD or Black Dog as they seem to be suited to brighter guitars.

keep in mind a light weight bolt on with a floyd will be on the bright side even if it is mahogany.  Painkiller is another option for your guitar.  maybe its just my guitar i have the rebel in but once gain i would put that in only the darkest/warmest/ and heaviest of guitars.  blackhawk would be cool to if you wanted more of that active tone.

I agree with this. The only all-mahogany guitar I have is a PRS Standard 22, and the only pickups I've tried in it are the Rebel Yells (after the stock pickups, which I hated). I love the Rebel Yells in that guitar.
Bare Knuckles owned: Mules, VHII, Rebel Yells, BKP-91, Strat 63 set, Riff Raffs.

I've got a PK in mahagony, very tight and articulate. The mids are sick on the PK especially for metal
