The most unreliable amp in the world
« on: February 18, 2006, 02:55:22 PM »
I.e.           :minigun:    mine      :bio:  :plasma:

Matamp couldn't fix my Seymour Duncan 'cos they couldn't get the parts. Then an EL84 was smashed in transit. When I put the original Svetlana EL34s back in (without the yellowjackets) the mains hum was ridiculous.
The reverb worked ok the first day I played it again, 12 hours of nothing later it decided to go digital, and was either fully on or off, nowhere in between.
Plus the overdrive channel cut in and out as I wound the gain up.

Basically this amp is really pissing me off - its been looked at three times now, and each time it hasn't been fully fixed.

I don't want to sell it 'cos it sounds ok, it has a mysterious silver ''SE - #06'' sticker on the back of it (special edition??) and not many people have one. Probably for good reason

So my question is - does anybody know of a very, very good and thorough amp repairer in the South East or Midlands area who could sort this amp once and for all... perhaps even blueprint the thing and rewire it PTP if necessary?! Thanks!

It's a Seymour Duncan Convertible 60 combo. I think the problem is that no tech so far has even seen one, let alone fixed one!

Those are supposed to be good amps! Although, they are pretty different, so I'm not surprised your tech is having troubles.

I had a Seymour Duncan combo of some sort and it was really reliable and sounded great.

Sorry I can't help you with any repairer recommendations.

If Matamp can't get hold of the parts I imagine they're very obscure, and that anone else will also have trouble getting hold of the correct parts.

I'm surprised Matamp looked at it at all - Jeff had me under the impression that they don't do repairs on non-Matamp (or Orange) gear.

It depends...usually they farm out repairs on non matamp gear.

Friend of mine had the Convertible, he liked the sound but always had some sort of rattling and buzzing. Something loose somewhere but never could track it down. I vote for a new amp.

Have you considered going over to the Seymour Duncan forum to ask for help there?

They may even be able to get you a schematic for it or any other help you may need.
Selling lots of gear, enquire within!......

Dave actually offered to do it, and I don't think Jeff knew...maybe that's why they 'couldn't get the parts'. :?  When it comes to resistors, capacitors etc, I thought parts was parts!

I did search that forum, all I learnt was that people thought it was a good amp, they'd 'heard amazing things about the clean channel'....and that nobody seemed to have one. BTW that's the first time I've scanned over a non-bkp forum....500 users online! I was shocked  :o !

I know, this one's got a mind of its own.

HJM you rewired your Super Reverb point to point - was this for reliability? Do you think its an option on my Duncan?

Thanks for everyone's input  :)
