Capacitors and Pots

Just bought a set of mules for my sg special and was wondering how big a difference the ungraded pots and capacitors make. its another £53 for 4 pots and 2 capacitors and just wanted to know if it was worth it

cheers, i think you may have convinced me :). good job i found a set of mules brand new on ebay for £150 lolm id be broke otherwise!

Doesn't Gibson sometimes use 300k pots for their SGs (maybe other models as well)? If your guitar has 300k pots you should defenitely upgrade to 500k or the 550k BKP ones.

My Les Paul from 1998 has 300k pots too. Sounds good enough with the Mules in it  :D

i think they do yea. though ive looked at the electronics of mine and it looks like a bitch to do! its all done on a pcb board thats stuck to the guitar. the pickups arent soldered in but have a kind plug and play end to them, guitar shop jobby i think

Nope, that's stock on some recent gibbies. As far as I'm concerned I'd get rid of all that junk and rewire the whole thing the good ole way  :lol:

That's exactly what I did when putting Warpigs in my SG. (And I've still got the intact PCB to show friends.) The 550k capacitors add a clarity that the original capacitors (and pickups) simply couldn't match.

I think the main upgrade comes from the 550k (instead of 500 or lower) pots.

Is it just me or does the tone pot not do all that much for almost 2/3s of its way on the BKP humbucker default and recommended combination of 550k log pots and .022 cap for bridge and .015 for neck? I noticed that on my Nailbombs, Aftermaths and Mules especially on the neck, the only audible changes to the tone happen on the last bit of the pot's way. Why? How do you guys use that then?
