Searching for Pickups for a new Custom Guitar - Aftermath?
« on: September 10, 2012, 08:07:03 AM »
Hi,

i'm getting my second custom guitar with

- a rosewood neck bolt on
- ebony fingerbaord
- korina body
- buckeye burl top
- Schaller Hannes bridge

The guitar will be used for a lot of styles, since i mostly play thinks like Pain of Salvation. Lot of different sounds, switching from clean, to crunch, to highgain. I don't need really fat super highgain heavy sounds. More like modern, but vintage orientated sounds.

Tim suggested the Aftermath set, from which i only heard good thinks about. A friend of mine said i should go with a Rebell Yell in the bridge an a VHII in the neck.

What do you think? Any other suggestions?

Thank and best regards from Germany

edit:
-the guitar will be tuned at standard E

I've not got experience of the wood combination that you're using, however i would say that Tim's suggestions have always been spot on for what i've requested.

organized to try the Aftermath today...  nothing for me. Way to much for my versatile playing. So does anyone have other suggestions?

The Black Dog and the Rebell Yell are my favorites for now. Maybe the Rebell could be to harsh with an ebony fretboard? The Black Dog seems to be very defined in sound and also very versitale. Open sounding, less compression then the contemporary, but capable of doing fat highgain sounds aswell.
Maybe a combination of the Pickups? How are the clean tones of these two?

best regards :)

At least it is not harsh in my LP Custom guitar. It is definitely not smooth and has a lot of cut. Great pickup set. I don't use this guitar for clean stuff - at least not the bridge pickup so I cannot really comment on that. If I played clean stuff on that guitar I would use the neck pickup or both together.

I don't have experience with the Black Dog.

Cheers Stephan
