Marshall: 50 Years Of Loud Concert
« on: September 23, 2012, 07:41:30 PM »
Hey guys.

Not sure if anyone heard much about this but last night was a gig at Wembley Arena (in London for anyone outside the UK that may not know) for a Tribute to Jim Marshall and to celebrate Marshall Amps 50th Anniversary.

I was lucky enough to go and it was pretty awesome :D

Here's the lineup (copy/pasted from another site so sorry it's all typed in capitals):

JOE SATRIANI (CHICKENFOOT), ZAKK WYLDE (BLACK LABEL SOCIETY), PAUL GILBERT (MR BIG), DOUG ALDRICH (WHITESNAKE), BRIAN TICHY (WHITESNAKE),  YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BILLY DUFFY (THE CULT), COREY TAYLOR (SLIPKNOT/SOUR STONE), TIM ‘RIPPER’ OWENS (JUDAS PRIEST), GLENN HUGHES (BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE), MIKE PORTNOY (DREAM THEATER), ANDY FRASER (FREE), KERRY KING (SLAYER)

Here is a link to a professional review of the event where he details all the lineup changes and the material played as I was too busy enjoying the gig to remember it all :smack:

http://www.examiner.com/review/marshall-50-years-of-loud-at-wembley-arena

Both Tim 'Ripper' Owens and Corey Taylor really impressed me with their vocal performances. Ripper was really great on the Dio/Sabbath song they did and I was really surprised by how close he was able to get to Dio's vocal delivery and tonality. Corey Taylor was awesome on his stuff too. 'Mouth For War' was 1 stand out track of his for me.

The only parts of the night I didn't really enjoy as much as the rest of it were Zakk Wyldes overly extended solos as they got really samey and Yngwies whole 15 minute set. Whilst technically impressive it got really boring after a few minutes as he'd already 'blown his load' so to speak and just repeated the same thing over and over again. He also doesn't know when to stop playing as during his numbers with Glen Hughes on bass and vocals, Yngwie just soloed all over the top of the vocals and just covered them up.

The finale of the night was a version of 'Smoke On The Water' where everyone apart from Zakk Wylde, Kerry King, Billy Duffy, Mike Portnoy, Tim Owens and Corey Taylor came back out and took turns on it. Luckilly no-one (apart from Yngwie........... again) took it overly seriously by the looks of it and just had a good time.

EDIT: Here's an album of photos that Marshall have put up from the event if anyone's interested https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151736656146917.418675.194362866916&type=3

Nah, nothing like that at all tbh.

Whenever there wasn't anyone playing it was either Al Murray/Pub Landlord or Nicko McBrain hosting or they showed short VTs on the large screens interviewing famous users about Marshall etc.

Friends of mine went and I could have but declined as I felt that there really wasn't anyone I'd want to see
They all seemed like the usual signature artists and widdle players that always get wheeled out at these things.

I would loved them to have managed to get artists who really did big things for marshall or for whom Marshall was an important part of their image etc

You know - like Clapton , Townsend, obviously Hendrix couldn't be there but maybe Randy California standing in for him. Jimmy Page or Jeff beck, British Heavy Metal bands like Judas Priest or Maiden, or Saxon. EVH would have been nice and I'm sure the companies that these guys now endorse could get over their territorial issues to honour Jim Marshall for 1 night.

Who else would you suggest that would be closely associated with Marshall amps for their sound or stage back line?

It's not something I would've chosen to have gone to myself by my girlfriend got me the tickers for our 10th anniversary so we made a weekend of it.

I'm very surprised they didn't get Slash tbh as he's probably the biggest Marshall 'poster boy' in most peoples eyes but he's in America on his own tour so guess that's out of the picture.

I'm sure they did what they could. The one thing I'm happy about is that all the guitarists they had all not only played Marshalls, but still do play Marshalls. I was kind of disappointed when Fender did something similar to this for Strats and brought out so many players who you would never ever associate with Fender, let alone a Strat.

I have that Strat concert DVD and agree with you 100%. Brian May for example, wtf?!

OOF! Just watched a vid of Smoke on the Water...WAY too many ego's clashing on one stage and far too many guitars, hah!

Having said that, I would have loved to have been there, what an experience! :D

Exactly, that was just them trying to get any big name they can get to beef up their lineup instead of honoring those who were true to the brand and guitar. Slash would have definitely been great to have there but they pulled a decent lineup. I personally would have liked to see the boys from Iron Maiden as they've used Marshalls a lot, but other than that I'd say they did well.

To be honest, it wasn't as bad as you'd expect!

Apart from Yngwie and some of Zakk Wyldes set no-one seemed to really have too much egomania happening

During the Smoke On The Water finale there was so much happening you couldn't hear any 1 individual when they were soloing.

Chris George (Marshall demonstrator and part organiser of the event) has tweeted today, when asked, that Joe Perry, Slash, Billy Gibbons and Joe Bonamassa (sp?) were all meant to have appeared at the event but had tour clashes etc.

That would've been great as Joe Perry and Slash were 2 of my earliest influences  :D

Oops - so out of touch - almost as bad as suggesting Hendrix play himself

A real shame they couldn't find more high profile users .

Heard that Malmsteen was fun to watch though......

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring after the 1st minute or so though

I can admire and appreciate the talent and skill and the dedication it must take to get to that level but after the 1st minute or so when he'd done all his tricks, it was extremely boring.
