what happens...
« on: September 30, 2012, 10:09:14 AM »
pondering the meaning of life as I often do when my body is recuperating from an over enthusiastic embrace of Highland malt, will someone please explain to me what really does happen when the cows come home...?

Well apparently, the first thing that happens,  is that lots of people immediately stop saying or doing something that they had been previously doing repetitively.  What the second thing is, I'm not really sure , but I'm sure there would  be much more free time now available to do it. As to what that second thing might really be - I'm sure we could debate , till the cows come home a second time.

Perhaps it's just better to restrict random migration of the cows in the first place ?

I don't think it was "cows in general". I think it was a herd of particularly exceptional and enlightened cows who felt that there must be more to life than they had experienced so far. So one day they set out to find the "truth", which, as we all know, "is out there".

Of course, they haven't been seen for some time now, and have therefore passed into the popular saying that we use.

But when these cows do finally come home and explain it all to us, we won't need to debate anything anymore...

With a bit of luck, the inhabitants of the first village that they visited didn't realise what they were up to... so the quest for truth ended up as some rather satisfying roast dinners... they won't ever come home now... and the rest of us won't have to face the truth that they were searching for.

Yes, AndyR has hit it I think : It was in fact a restricted range of ruminating ruminants , released to route out and revel in rare and remarkable revelations .  That kind of knocks Dolphins off the top spot then ...

As I long suspected ,  our very own PhillyQ is a veritable harbinger / Oracle of deepest truths !

The cows themselves ,  producing deeply symbolic / sacrificial blocks of   'Philly-Delphian'  soft Cheese, with which to honour him.

The  pile of ( what we had previously assumed to be ) guitar necks under his bed,  secretly being the pre-treated fence posts , with which to build  the  ' Great enclosure of Hathor'  - and his pile of pickups being carefully wired / aligned in a grid of esoteric design , with which he can send the landing co-ordinates to the great  space ship that Philly  just happened to have a picture of   .

A coincidence ? I think not.  8)

Its all very well talking about cows coming home but supposing they simply don't want to. Have you thought of that?. They might have left in the first place due to intolerable oppressive conditions or perhaps relationship issues, now has anyone considered that I must ask. I think we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves and might be taking it for granted that they will be coming "home" as you so patronisingly call it. That is the trouble with this forum sometimes, opinionated folk come on making all kinds of presumptions and this is just the latest in a long line of provocative posts.  Do you have any evidence that the cows will be coming home or is this merely your opinion?  Oh excuse me, perhaps you just read it on the internet somewhere well duh, has anyone ever told you that WIKI isn't always true. People like you make me sooooooooooooooo sick, no worse that that they make me wanna kill a baby dolphin etc etc

....unless they are on their holidays of course in which case I would suggest having a look around the shed and seeing if they have left any details about the duration of their holiday. I say this because I have just got back from holiday and I am sure, in the next room, I heard some distinctly bovine noises of the occupants.

By the way, what is everyone's favourite pick to use for psychedelic funk folk.

Pics or it didn't happen etc

No, no, you have it all wrong!

The real meaning of 'when the cows come home' bringing an end to any ongoing discussion is very simple.

As we all know, a major mechanism for genetic diversification from an extant species is geographical isolation. A group of cows in the earliest centuries of the agricultural revolution and the emergence of cows through domestication and selective breeding attained a higher level of intelligence than we see in modern cows and realised that they were being fooled. The wool was being pulled over their eyes as to the true nature of their surroundings, and the lush fields that sustained them and the humans that tended to their needs had merely created a false reality that simulated their wildest cow-dreams in order to pacify and imprison them, in their own delusion that they were free in luxurious and plentiful grassland, devoid of predators and need, them and use them for milk, and ultimately slaughter them all.

Having attained this level of awareness, The One Cow led a group of cows to a promised Cow Land, called Cowon. Here, they have mutated over time, selectively breeding themselves for intelligence, strength, speed and tastiness (in order to taunt us when judgement day comes to pass). They have evolved in isolation into Supercows, and they plan to return 'Home', to the fields, to free their brethren and imprison and slaughter us, ending the human race and any conversation that happens to be occurring at the time.

If they've been away for that long, surely this is no longer their home? Silly old sayings and their lack of explicit and descriptive definitions!
