Need Help: Bare Knuckles for Mahogany JP7
« on: September 30, 2012, 08:17:03 PM »
Hey all-

So I've got myself a beautiful new PDN BFR JP7 from Music Man,
(Pictures: http://forums.ernieball.com/music-man-guitars/54452-finally-here-ngd-pdn-ball-family-reserve-john-petrucci-7-holy-grail.html)

and I'm NOT getting along with the CrunchLab 7 at ALL. With the mahogany body, there is too much low mids/lows- the 7th string is mud city. All jumbled together. I've got some money to get a Bare Knuckle bridge, and I really cannot decide.

I've got a Ceramic Nailbomb in my Alder JP6, which I love.

I've been considering the Miracle Man. Any suggestions from people with 7 string BKPs in a mahogany guitar? Many thanks!

Playing through an ENGL Steve Morse signature.

I've got an Aftermath set in my AX7521 and it's tuned down to G C G C F A D and the note clarity at high gain levels is unreal!  I highly recommend it.

Everyone seems to love the Aftermath! And no doubt its a great pickup, I'm just worried that the low spike will make it too bass heavy in a Mahogany guitar. Anyone else have experience with the wood combination?

Try switching the bridge pickup around so the bar is facing the bridge, as that's what JP doe in his 7-strings to give him a tighter tone
BKPs: ESP Eclipse I CTM FT w/Riff Raff bridge/Mule neck - ESP Eclipse I CTM w/Rebel Yells - LTD EC-1000 FT w/Aftermaths - Music Man JPIX w/Juggernauts

Isn't that model Basswood, btw?

That might help already, I find that way around the tone is more agressive, tighter and less bass heavy (for my axe I usually prefer the more musical, classic and smooth way which you currently have). JP uses both ways for different guitars and sounds.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Normally they are Basswood, yes, but mine's a limited run with mahogany body

you have an ENGL
you don't need another bass heavy high output ceramic pickup

get a VHII
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat
