Mules, Les Paul, SLO clone and home recording
« on: October 04, 2012, 05:28:02 PM »
Hey guys.

I've had some spare time this week so thought I'd do a bit of recording for my own amusement:

http://soundcloud.com/browsif/master-jailbreak-slo-mules

Here's the info for the track:

Guitar: 1998 Gibson Les Paul Standard with Bareknuckle Mules

Amp: Soldano SLO copy built by my good friend Mr Tony Boyes. The amp is on the clean channel with Crunch mode engaged.

Cab: Zilla Fatboy 2x12 with Celestion Vintage 30s. Not the best speakers for this amp but it's all I have.

Microphone: Audix I5 set on axis about 1/2 way between speaker edge and centre

Boost (used on Choruses and wah parts): Digitech Bad Monkey

Wah: Homebrew Electronics Medicine Bawl Wah with vintage/yellow fasel inductor

There are some timing issues due to not being able to hear the backing track due to the amp being in the same room as me.

There's also no post production done to the track aside from a bit of panning and some trimming of noise etc.

That sounded really good. In the recording I didn't find the V30s too bright paired up with the Splawn. I was expecting way more treble.

I recommended him some different power valves that got it more where he wanted it.

Cheers!

I didn't use the Splawn though (bust power valve), I used the SLO clone.

When I got it from Tony it had 5881s in it which sounded awesome, but as the volume went up they just didn't work with the V30s in my cab. So Tony suggested a set of JJ 6L6GCs and they tamed it to a point where I'm really happy with it.

The voicing of the Splawn is more compressed than that of the SLO, which I find helps with keeping the Treble in check.

Oh man. Totally brainless reffering to the Splawn when the title states a SLO clone

Anyways. I stick to my comment. Sounds great!  :D

No probs mate, we're all allowed a blonde moment now and again!

Sounds awesome!

Thanks!

I was a bit disappointed when I couldn't get my BLUE Condenser mic to work but I'm really happy with how the single mic recording turned out.
