Opinions on Delays? Educate me.
« on: February 21, 2006, 12:36:26 PM »
Hi all.

I am looking to jump into the realm of delay pedals. Now silly question no1. I play 60s and 70s hard rock (Zep,Cream,Sabbath,....) and GnR, Tool, Pearl Jam from modern stuff. Is a delay usefull for these kind of bands?

2nd.

I am considering the following

EHX Deluxe Memory Man (140quid)
CM Delayla (160quid)
HBE Mimic MockII (155quid)
Toadworks Redux (155quid)

Any opinions? experiences?

Thanks in advance
Yannis

I've heard the Toadworks is a pretty neat effect but not particularly useful when it comes to being a straight delay. The EHX is pretty highly rated by most of its users, but will take up a fair bit of space on your pedal board.

You know exactly what delay is, right? Because if you can hear it on the records by the artists you like, then you'll know you want it! Also, delay is often very subtley involved in many songs, sometimes just to thicken up a vocal part or a solo etc. It's not always as obvious as it is in, say, 'Disposition' by Tool.

Cheers Willo.

Well to be honest i have a hard time identifying delay in the bands i listed earlier on.

What i do know, is that a friend of mine gave me a demonstration of several delay pedals (not the ones listed) via Skype, and i was stoked by the nice features it can procide when playing or jamming in general (not to a particular song).

There's also a new one from Home Brew Electronics for $195.-.

The Danelectro delay pedals are also quite good for the money.

I originally recommended the Fulltone Tube Tape Echo.
But it's SPENSIVE!!

Hey TO, have you used the Gigadelay? It's currently top of the list on my delay's to buy. How did/do you find it?

Also delay on:

The Grudge, 2:21 - 2: 35, 6:31 - 6:43
Schism, 3:31 - 5:21
Parabola 0:10 - 0:19
Ticks and Leeches, 0:31 - 0:55
Disposition, pretty much all guitar tracks

Those are just some of the different types of delay used on the Tool album, Lateralus. There's quite a lot of delay on that album. Some of it is quite obvious, and some of it is more subtle and used to fill out space in the song. Hopefully you can pick up on those examples and then hear them in other songs.

Personally, I don't think it would ever be a mistake to get a delay pedal - they are really great pedals to have, so long as you get the right one.

Oops!  My bad.

Roland Space Echo and the old Echoplex units are actual tape echo/delay units. They cost a fortune but this is what all the greats used. Brian May, Jimmy Page, Brian Setzer etc. They're not reliable on stage but what a
sound! You can also do the middle section of 'whole lotta love' with those things.

HBE looks good, but it also looks like a DM2/3 clone whereas the Delayla/DMM look like they pack more features
