Sterling JP100 Compatibility? + Which pups combo??
« on: October 14, 2012, 01:34:28 PM »
Hi guys.

Albeit, i'm new to the forum, I am looking to switch out my stock pups in my Sterling JP100 for a BKP set. Sadly to say i've never changed pickups in my guitars before. I have no problems with soldering or electronics, it's just the pickup attributes, such as 'pots' and "4 or braided 2" conductors??. If anyone can give me some insight on whether 4 conductor or braided 2 conductor, say, Black Hawk set would be compatible right outta the box for my JP100? (its a 2 humbucker setup as a lot of you probably know already.

Also, what combinations of BKP's would give me a tight, chuggy sound, but with tone definition and some good highs? I was thinking kinda a Scarlet/Luck as a constant tone from P2 or something along the lines.

Thanks guys, sorry I'm kinda a newb on the whole pickup changing thing :P

Cheers!

Hi there

The 4 conductors option gives the option to install a coil split or serie/parallel switch. The 2 inner conductors come pre-wired so you can just install the pup like any other bucker if you don't have any use for a split. I don't know much about your guitar but from a quick search it looks like a very straightforward wiring so both options should work - but better to go for the 4 conductors, in case you want to try a split or serie/parallel mod.

wrt/ pots, I assume your guitar already has 500K pots so you shouldn't have to change them, but you'd better check with your multimeter, "500K" pots have a +/- 10% tolerance and are more often around 450K - and yes, 50Kohm makes an audible treble loss.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)
