the volute is just there for the fancy laminations to look cool.   its as good a reason as any to do it, it does indeed look cool

That is cool, so they put in some laminated wood to strengthen the transition from headstock to neck, and the neck broke just behind those enhancers? LOL.

that looks to be a previous repair to a break closer to the headstock.  it also shows that the gibson volute is pretty useless

that's so cool. but i'm left thinking - christ, what a lot of work!!!  I'd be tempted just to put up with a thin neck!!!

Nah, if your skills and talents go that way, the work is very much part of the pleasure. I bet there's a massive feeling of satisfaction when you create something that awesome.
