Supermassive 90 or equivalent humbucker for Custom Firebird
« on: October 25, 2012, 06:57:07 PM »
Hey all,

I am thinking about building a custom Firebird style guitar using Supermassive 90 pickups. The clips sound promising but my experience with p90s is rather slim at best and I figure I can take this opportunity as a learning experience. Is there anyone that uses Supermassives that can speak to how they would be in a mahogany guitar?

Alternatively, is there an equivalent humbucker out there? I'm thinking that either MM or CS would get me to a closer sound that the Supermassive provides but it still seems a bit off.

Any chance I could bother the forum for thoughts and input on either option with mahogany?
Live it to enjoy it.

I've got one in a reissue Les Paul Junior, single bridge pickup, all mahogany with the late 50s neck. The Supermassive 90 is, well, super massive. Give it gain and the thing absolutely roars. It's rather bass-heavy and thick, but even with the tone rolled completely off the notes are clear and defined, not muddy in the slightest. Of course, a neck pickup would probably lose some definition if you did the same thing, but I don't necessarily thing that's a bad thing.
