Pickup needed for blending with EMGs
« on: November 11, 2012, 07:23:14 AM »
Alright fellas,

I got one for you.  Our band has three guitarist.  We do a pretty extreme style of metal, and it crosses over from Industrial Metal, through death, black, and even heavy rock elements.  The other two guitarist use Mesa Recs, and EMG.  I'm using a Fortin Modded Marshall, and a Warpig A5 in a Les Paul. Digging the tone of my guitar, but I'm am likely to use a different guitar pretty soon.  Its an all mahogany build, with a set neck and an ebony board.

So my question is this;  What would be a bkp that would blend well with the emg 81's?  Not my favorite tone, but its about having the right sound for what we are doing.

I am happy to receive an insight from you high gainers, or others with sufficient experience.

 Cheers,

 -Jo

That or the Blackhawk I would say. Depending on the kind of blend you want maybe even an Aftermath.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

How does your current Warpig loaded guitar blend in with the other 2 guitarists? is there something you want more or less of? (within your bands sound)

So my question is this;  What would be a bkp that would blend well with the emg 81's?  Not my favorite tone, but its about having the right sound for what we are doing.

I can't make recommendations for high output pickups, but if the aim is to get a similar tone to your fellow guitarists, and not necessarily a tone you like personally..... maybe it's worth considering EMGs yourself?  They do give a pretty unique sound, as Tim Mills himself has acknowledged.

Probably shouldn't really be saying that on the BKP forum, I know.  Sorry.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I don't really see any reason to apologise  :/
After all, the point of the forum is to suggest the correct pickup for someone's needs and to be helpful, not to advertise.
Anyway, if we were to suggest something that didn't fit the purpose just because it's a BKP it wouldn't shine a good light on BKP, would it?

Thanks fellows.

I like the sound of my WarPig/Les Paul set up.  It sounds great with the tone with the other guys.

The thing is I'm getting another guitar, and I have contemplated using EMG, but the truth is, I like passive pickups more, and I like at the sound of BKP.  I've been using them for awhile now.  The Black Hawks, and the Aftermath, I'm not really into the sound of those.  This is an guitar that is set neck, mahogany body, and neck, with ebony fretboard.

If you like your Warpigs and they complement your band, i would say go Warpigs again, you are used to having a pickup with hot output and nothing of the BKP range (according to the charts anyways) would come as close. If you certainly wanted to go for a different pup then i would say Miracleman, according to the site it would be the next one in terms of power and low mids.

The Miracle Man is an obvious choice for anything metal.
However, I'm not really sure I get the point of the OP.

If you want a unique sound, then you can choose freely. If you want a similar sound from the other guitarist, then your amp will already make you sound different. In fact I would have supposed that the LesPaul Warpig V is a good complement with a Marshall-style amp.

Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Seeing as you like the WP a lot maybe get Pig90s in the other one? Different take on the same ballpark.

Thanks for the suggestion. Alex, I see your angle, and appreciate as well. The point of the op, is that we are getting different guitars, and the two to other guys are going with EMG and basically I want something that will blend well with their sound.  A5 Warpig in the Les Paul, and Fortin/Marshall sound pretty good with their set up, but things change when you use different guitars.  The Les Paul I have was a ton, and has allot of body to the sound with a very crisp top end. I've had to pull down my treble a significant amount. I use the presence more or less to get the appropriate shimmer.  We have a very dark saturated tone as far as the guitars go.

Again, I appreciate the feedback.  I will look in to all of your suggestions.
