Pickup for my Jackson SL1 through Peavey 5150

As the titel says, im looking for at new humbucker for my Jackson SL1 (neck-thru-body).
Im playing thru a Peavey 5150.

Im playing different kind of metal, with a melodic touch

Any ideers?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

It would be helpful to know a bit more about the woods in your Jackson and most of all the tones you are after.
Fat? Dry? Agressive? There are many ways to describe a sound.

Cause a pickup for metal with a melodic touch could be the Nailbomb, Holydiver, Rebell Yell, Blackhawk, Emerald,....there are a few too many possibitlys to recommend something without further info.

So: What do you want out of the PUs?

Ok...none of the BKPs really is scooped, youŽll have to do that with the amp or pedals.
But that helps to cut down some options. I would say you should have a closer look at the Ceramic Nailbomb, the Painkiller and the Miracle Man.
The MM is a great metal PU with a lot of lower mids giving it serious chunk. It feels the most scooped out of all BKPs I think (though it actually is not).

Then again I am no expert on these metal PUs.

What about the amp im using ... is there some of this pickups there won't fit whit a high gain amp?

What about the Aftermath?


And whats the different between ceramic or not ceramic?

All the PUs we listed so far are very capable of high gain applications (most BKPs are imho). PUs like the MM really love the gain of a cranked amp more than anything.

The Aftermath is of course always possible, but it is a special thing. It is very, very dry. Not too much low end but enough to deliver a serious punch and make it tighter than anything else (the MM for example is also very tight already and has a lot more chunk in the lows). There are a lot of centermids in the sound and it generally is very middy.
The neck very much reminds me of early John Petrucci tones.

PUs with ceramic magnets usually have a little more output, tighter bass and smoother mids with a little more rounded treble. Alnico PUs on the other hand are more agressive, organic and somewhat sweeter (there are also different kind of Alnico magnets, but for you only Alnico 5 would really qualify).
You need to know though that BKP alnicos still are tighter than most ceramics by other manufacturers and the BKP ceramics are more organic and lively than other manufacturers alnicos.

A good example for the difference is the Nailbomb. The ceramic version is tighter smoother and more rounded while the alnico version has more grind.

I think maybe the MM is a good choise for me - its difficult to descripe the exact sound im going for hmmm  :)

think maybe im looking for something in the near of a active pu like the emg 81? (but the Nailbomb and the pk and the AM also sounds very interesting  :D)

What about conductors - what the meaning of that and how does i know what im looking for?

and what about coverd vs. open ... is there any different in the sound?

BTW what is the C-bomb ... is it a cheramic version of the Nailbomb or?

C-Bomb = ceramic Nailbomb.
A-Bomb = alnico Nailbomb

YouŽll want for conductors when buying a PU. Everyone wants 4 basecally if they donŽt want to be vintage correct.
4 Conductor gives you the same possibilitys as braided 2 if you leave the extra wires taped to the side, but if you use them you get extra options like splitting. So get em with 4, canŽt go wrong.

Covered PUŽs do have a slightly smoother highs than uncovered PUs. BKPs are wound to minimize the difference though, so it will not be as grave as with other manufacturers. You can still hear it though.
Imho you should just get what you like best look whise, cause the difference is so small you can just make a small adjustment somewhere in your signal path to make up for it and looks sound awesome xD

If your trying to get a sound "scooped" and similar to Korn, bare knuckles are the LAST place you should be looking. Just get EMGs like every other band considering your not going after a special tone.

I'm just assuming you like Korn because of your name but again none of the bare knuckles are scooped at all, id be looking at an EMG 81 or a Dimarzio Steve's Special.

MM would be a ticket...But if you want bit more saturation and 81-like compression go for Cpig...You'll never need tube screamer...Also if you want scooped tone just adjust eq on your amp...More treble and presence less mids or buy 3channel dual recto

I dont go for the Korn sound ... thats just my last name   PDT_002

In this weekend i have had a listen to MM, AM, CS & WP ... I will listen some more to the soundclip, couse thsi is a damn hard desision  :)
