About weird pickup constructions...
« on: December 04, 2012, 10:29:21 AM »
So I played a Reverend Sensei RA guitar yesterday and noticed the strange pickups it had installed, take a look:

http://www.reverendguitars.com/reverend/guitars/set_neck_series/sensei_ra.html

I found the website of the manufacturer:

http://www.railhammer.com/pickups.html

And I've been wondering for quite some time by now how different polepieces, blade constructions and so on affect tone. I've seen on Keith Merrows Facebook that he took his Invader PUs and changed the lower string polepieces, he swapped them out for regular Duncan Distortion screws, saying it would make the lows clearer. So far I know: fatter polepieces, like the one on the Invader or the Allen Screws on BKPs make the bass fatter, blades obviously make stuff sound more defined and thinner and more evenly sounding when bending. I also know that covers make the sound warmer. What about double screw PUs and so on? Can anyone give me a bit of an insight as I've seen a lot of folks custom order BKPs concerning such facts.

Cheers

It was pretty solid actually. For a made in Korea instrument I couldn't find any flaws, the sound was decent and chunky, the string height was reasonably low without buzz and no ugly cosmetic flaws. I also really enjoyed the neck profile, not especially thin but not a baseball bat either, so I'd recommend it :)

Funny thing is Sylosis posted a pic on their Facebook of their guitarists Josh and Bailey with new Reverend guitars just minutes before I left for the music store and suddenly there's one hanging one the wall. Funny coincidence :P

Double screw poles give more bass - I have a Nailbomb with them and I used to have a set of SD Alan Holdsworths.  I'm guessing the opposite is true with double slugs, but haven't had any pickups that I could compare like to like and see.  I have a standard set of Nailbombs and so can compare, same with the SD-AH, as it's supposed to be a JB with double screws.  I know on the SD forum they say it's brghter, but I had a set and think the biggest difference is the bass response (perhaps why Jake E Lee likes the AH).
So many pickups, so little time

So basically the greatest difference would be the bass response? So I guess you could take away some of the muddiness in the Invader PUs by changing screws?
