Dont know if anyone has noticed this before but the main riff is almost exactly the same as Whole Lotta Love! Surely this isnt allowed! Infact alot of the first album sounds Zeppelinn-y to me.. which came first?!?

dude you cant call that 'almost exactly the same'

its barely comparable....

tell you what shouldnt be allowed though- in tribute by tenacious they play the ACTUAL stairway to heaven intro.... disgraceful.... listen out for it next time you hear the song...

Rush followed Zep by 5 yrs. There's an obvious influence on their first 3 albums (Rush, Fly By Night, Caress of Steel), but it's hardly a rip off. Zep was not above stealing a large portion of their riffs, either.

It's a well-documented fact that Zep influenced early Rush, as well as Skynrd, Cream, amd a few other bands.

As for it being 'allowed'; not sure what you mean. Take A Friend sounds nothing like Whole Lotta Love, imo, even tho the Zep influence is VERY strong, esp with Rutsey playing Drums.

agree with TO completely (think your names ben right?)- the influence is there but the song really doesnt sound anything like whole lotta love at all.

:o  :o ! It does sound very much like it! I'm not saying its a rip off or anything as I love Rush..

I cant even hear Stairway to Heaven in Tribute... maybe I have weird ears or something  :lol:

if its a joke... then i dont get it.... but its a cool little thing to put in a song anyway....

tom you might have the wrong version- theres two different version of tribute- an extended one with a ittle breakdowny kinda bit and a shorter one without it.

The arrival of Peart was the turning point for Rush. Over the next few albums they started to develop their own style. Despite the way their music is delivered sonically changing several times over the years, the Rush style is definately all their own.

One of my favourite bands and one of the best live bands I have ever seen, they have floored me every time.

If you haven't read it yet, definitely read Peart's Traveling Music, which was published last year. Ghost Rider is a much deeper, sadder (and, imo BETTER) book, but it's a really heavy read and has nothing to do with music or Rush. Traveling Music is a very interesting look at the music that Peart likes, as well as some great audiobiographical stuff about his youth in St. Catherines.
