Collectors (Other Passions of a Connoisseur)

With this being a once boutique but still undoubtedly high end pickup/guitar forum I'm always pleased to look at and learn from the guys who own the many wonderful guitars/amps. Some rare and overlooked classics and many new and often very expensive purchases. 

But... What other items distract you and please you in similar ways?

Personally, I've always had a passion for collecting watches and the mechanical artistry inside them. Recently I've also developed a love for classic razors (double edge and cut throat) and the art of wet shaving with them.

Both of these I've found attracting my interest in similar ways to guitar collecting. Once you go down the rabbit hole and start reading about and buying watches/razors the passions become even more ingrained.

So what are your "extracurricular" passions?

Bits of WW2 aircraft- I don't have a lot but I have a few pieces of aluminium that to a casual observer would be of no consequence.
I also spend a lot of time studying history.

Teach yourself language courses - an area of publishing that has progressively got worse since the heyday of the 1960s-70s.

While it is still somewhat of a music related item, I collect artist's guitar picks. It all started with Paul Stanley and KISS and I haven't stopped since! I find it cool to have a part of what a great guitarist or bassist used to make great music, without breaking the bank (for the most part).

might be worth taking a little walk around dark peak in glossop if you ever get the chance, or indeed have not been so far

its a bit odd when you are lost in the fog and suddenly come across little bits of metal, some with bits of paint on.

I do collect Bandshirts. I have one from nearly every band / artist I went to see live (some times multiple) and some more. I stopped counting when I reached 100 shirts...have gotten several since that. On the downside my closet is overflowing....on the plus side I rarely have to wash shirts! xD

I also collect concert memorabilia. I have every ticket I ever had on my wall with things like setlists, drumsticks and picks pinned on there too. Everything I managed to snatch (nothing bought). Everything autographed where I was able to get one. The ones I charish most are my two Mike Portnoy drumsticks (one with Adrenaline Mob one with Flying Colors), my Vinnie Paul stick (ex Pantera) and my Steve Vai setlist.

I haven't been there Wez but it is on the list. I've been to a few sites near where I live and keep my eyes peeled for bits and pieces.  I prefer the relic to come from a non fatal crash though you can't always be sure and I do have a piece from a Spitfire that was definitely fatal. I've started thinking about getting into WW2 aircraft instrumentation too but that can be pricey.

Perhaps boring, but I collect - well a bit and not very fanatic - wines and ports. I started in the eighties when I drove my Volkswagen T2 camper trough Europe and loaded it up with bottles at wineries and supermarkets. Still have some Bordeaux from the seventies and eighties in the cellar. I hope they're still drinkable. Let's give it a try at Christmas.

I started in the eighties when I drove my Volkswagen T2 camper trough Europe and loaded it up with bottles at wineries and supermarkets. Still have some Bordeaux from the seventies and eighties in the cellar. I hope they're still drinkable. Let's give it a try at Christmas.

Just don´t poison yourself! Be especially carefull with austrian ones from the early 80s....though they will help you not ending up like Jack in the Shining ;)

No Austrians, though you could use them to fill up the antifrostreservoir from your car.
Just some ''higher'' Bordeaux, Côte Rôtie (Rhône North), Rhône Villages, Madiran, Cahors, some Dão, Brunello di Montalcino, Barbaresco, Barolo and Valpolicella Amarone.

I definitely have an obsessive collector mentality, and I collect lots of things like books , CDs, Blu-rays, guitar magazines.... I do like "complete sets".  :roll:

If I decide I like an author, director or artist I often find myself in a "campaign" of acquiring absolutely everything they've ever done.  Then I forget about them for a few years, until I find they've done something new, at which point I obsessively acquire all the new stuff.  And so it goes.

Nothing very interesting or valuable, though, except my guitars (and their constituent parts....!)
