Power Metal Pickups?
« on: December 16, 2012, 12:01:56 PM »
I briefly had a spell with BKPs just over a year ago, but had to sell a lot of my equipment to finance some other things. The only equipment I have at the moment is an ESP Eclipse I and a Dual Rectifier. I'm looking for some pickups to replace the EMGs currently in. I've done a good search on the forum and I have a feeling that the first thing you'd recommend would be the Miracle Man, but I was hoping for something a bit more "Organic". Only having the one guitar at the moment, I'm trying to find a humbucker set that's versatile and can cover clean tones, through to rock, through to heavier elements. I'm a big fan of Edguy, so possibly something like their sound. I'm not a fan of the sterile, lightning fast shred sound: I prefer to have a more dynamic and expressive sound when playing solos. Definitely something which will work with the Volume Pot.

Also being a dual guitar set-up, It'd be nice to have something to cut through the mix live.

Cheers, Cammi

What about a Black Dog? Tight enough for metal and lower tunings. The Mesa has enough gain, so a lower output pickup could work great. I prefer lower output pickups on my Orange Rockerverb.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Yeah I was thinking something lower output. The Rec is a beast. Even my mate's Slash Les Paul can pull off metal on it. The Black Dog is some food for thought thought. That pickup completely crossed my mind. I'll have a search.

I'm in E Standard by the way. I just brought this up as it's also 24.75" scale, which is completely the opposite of what the Black Dog is described to suit. Of course I could be wrong.

I have a Black Dog as well and it is good for Hammerfall style sounds. I have it in an SG.

The Nailbomb is too dark for your guitar most likely, as would be the Holy Diver; I have the same guitar as you (the black one with the ebony fret board) and from experimenting a bit with pickups I would always go with something bright and clear. The Black Dog is clear enough. The Miracle Man is the obvious choice, though. I'd probably recommend that first unless you are looking for something with lower output. A Cold Sweat would probably work as well.

Consider the fact that the Black Dog works well with low tunings and longer scales a bonus. It's not what it's about really. It's mostly about a PAF on steroids. It works great for metal as well.

Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Uhu ? I would have thought the Eclipse would be rather brighter than a SG, and the ABomb works JustFine(tm) in my SG...

But well, I don't have an Eclipse so you probably know better than me  :?

I'll try and see how I get on with the Black Dog then. And I find the Eclipse quite balanced. I think the thinner body with maple top & ebony fretboard help that. I really love the metal clip for the Black Dog, so this could be an interesting purchase.

I thought so as well, but mine is relatively dark and warm. Maybe mine is different.
The SG I have is more midrangey, definitely, than the Eclipse.

the miracle man sounds really good through a rectifier, although I'm not fond on that amp (had a single and a dual)
it cleans up surprisingly well with the volume pot and without losing the top and the lead tone is amazing
you just gotta set the pickup height properly
I don't like most alnico pickups though that amp
my band just finished 4 songs for a new ep
50% of the rhythms and 80% of the leads were done with the miracle man in a prs mccarty

OK change of plan, I'm going to give the Miracle Man a shot in the bridge again. I didn't really get much of a play around last time.

But new question: What would be a good neck pickup to match up with to provide more versatility? I was thinking perhaps a Cold Sweat?

Also I've really been considering selling my MESA and getting an ENGL Savage. Any opinions on this?

Maybe try some Alnico Bombs?  :D

I have a Ceramic bridge/ Aneck set on a LP, they are great.  :D
