New string gauge set - on trial

We are thinking of launching another string pack to meet the needs of a few players that have asked for a solution to their needs.

What the problem is:

Some players find that a normal set of 10-46 strings (10,13,17,26,36,46)are a bit floppy in the bass strings.
Here is our version:


For some players the solution has been to go to the skinny top heavy bottom variety where the string gauges go 10,13,17,30,42,52 - this is like the lights strings from a set of 10s and the heavy strings from a set of 12's
Once again - here is our pack:

But many players say that whilst it fixes the floppy issues they just find that the bass strings are a bit much for them .

So we are going to trial a new set where we take the skinny strings from a set of 10s , but the bass strings from our set of 11's. (Note that our 11 set - Legs 11s has a 50 for the low E rather than the 48 that Ernie Ball use as we find that the 48 is too floppy if you play drop D tuning)


So the new set will run 10,13,17,28,38,50

We will do a trial run of these to see how well they work for players - give us a shout if you want to try a set
If they work out well we will have some artwork and packaging done

All we need now is a cheesy name to call them.......suggestions on a postcard

Great to see that someone cares. I currently use 10-52s from Elixir on Standard-E and whilst I like the tightness, I might give this set a try. Thanks Jonathan! :)

We aim to have Vince Ray do the artwork once again , once we have chosen a theme

We found that this gauge had been discussed at least 3 times in the last week with separate customers so it was time to do something about it.

We looked at a chart of string tensions for different tunings and were trying to get a more consistent tuning string to string.
We also looked for a gauge to suit one player to tune down two semitones  who normally plays in E with 9-42s  and these gauges kept the tensions nearly exactly the same.

i've never tried the high part of a set of 10s with the low part of a set of 11s, but i have tried those 10-52s, and as you said, they can be a bit much on the lower strings. then again, i feel the same with 9-46s :lol:

I wonder if just changing the low E would help? granted, that's probably not feasible on an industrial manufacturing scale, but it's only really the low E i have a problem with. Also considering a lot of players tune down to drop D, it's normally only the E that that affects.

Can you give me a little more info on these strings? Which makes are they similar to?

They are made for us by Picato - feel wise i think they are close to D'addario , although the recent Rotosound - like the ones you get with a set of BKPs seem to feel similar as well.

I know the point you make - in that case just buy the closest set and an additional string to suit the drop D
It is fascinating to see how big the jump in string gauge is as you lower the tuning to keep the same tension as you had before.
On a set of 10-46 you'd probably want to go to a 50 rather than a 48 to get a nice drop D tension.

It's a numbers game unfortunately  - if enough players wanted that gauge then it'd make sense to offer it as a ready made set and pay to have the artwork and printing done, but for a select couple of players  maybe not worth doing apart from for vanity reasons.

As a variation on the "Light Tops, Heavy Bottoms" theme, how about something like "It's All Gone Pear Shaped"....?

10-50 sounds quite promising to me, a little more solidity in the bass strings would be good sometimes.

I love the artwork and the fact you are doing this for players. I think i'll stick with my 9,5-44's though. I may actually try out your 9s once ive run out of packs.

The choice of Gauge,  is redolent of the GHS 'Dave GIlmour' Strat set as well.  

Light Blue background artwork ,  and something like  'Slickness'n'Thickness'  perhaps ?

Dave Gilmour sets are 10, 12, 16, 28, 38, 48 for Fenders (same gauges I've used for years), and 10.5, 13, 17, 30, 40, 50 for Gibsons (I use an 11 rather than 10.5).  These give a similar tension on both scale lengths when you tune to standard tuning. 

Jonathan, you could call them purrfect legs and firm bottoms, as this is what you are setting out to do with the set.
