Is it a vhII?
« on: January 03, 2013, 07:38:32 PM »
Hi folks,
You may have noticed I have a vhII up for sale on the forum. I bought this second hand sometime ago. I've just measured the resistance of the pickup and its reading 9.25k which is a bit higher than the bkp specs. Is it possible that this is a slightly overwound vhII or that my cheap multi meter is not accurate or that it was mis-sold to me in the first place and is more likely to be a black dog?
What do you think learned ones.

9.25k is not way off - could be within multimeter tolerances. Also note that higher room temperature leads to higher DC resistance measurements.

The sure way to identify a VHII would be the wire and the magnet - 42 AWG plain enamel and a long alnico V magnet. The Black Dog has a 42.5 AWG polysol wire and a short magnet. However, since I never had both of those magnets alongside each other I would not be able to tell the difference on an isolated basis. Same for the wire size. Best to send Tim a picture - maybe he can identify the pickup.

Cheers Stephan

Cheers Stephan.
I want to try and avoid dismantling the pickup obviously from a sale point of view. When it was in my strat it pretty much ticked all the vhII boxes, but then not having tried black dogs, I have no comparison.
Another example for putting the pickup name on the baseplate me thinks!

Just had word back from b.k. And they reckon its hard to tell for sure but is within the tolerances and the room temperature thing too. So anyone want to buy a vhII!

As you say, the case for putting the name on the baseplate is becoming overwhelming!  It only needs a sticker.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Anyone who has had different variations of the same pickup over the years may note that there have been a few slight changes to the specs of each model as Tim refined them to where he wants them to be.
