My Voodoo V-plex amp modded by Trace at Voodoo
« on: January 06, 2013, 02:43:05 PM »
Hi guys,
I thought I would let you guys know what its like to have Trace from Voodoo mod or work on one of your amps.

My amp being done was my 50 Watt non master volume Voodoo V-plex that had been converted by the previous owner to a V-rock.  I wanted to put it back to a V-plex and have Trace add a Master volume, and I also wanted it tweaked for me.

It started with a phone call to Trace to talk to him about what I was looking for. When you do this, HAVE A PEN And PAPER with you to take notes. Trace will give you all kinds of info about tone from speakers, pickups, strings, to cables to tubes.....WRITE IT DOWN!

I explained what I use for gear, how I play, what I play and what I was looking for from my amp. He then helps you choose the right mod or mods (if you need one) for what your looking for. (NOTE: be honest with your answers. No amp MOD is going to make up for lousy technique). The very first time I talked to him, I took the info he shared with me, and I was able to tweak my gear to add some of what I was looking for, without having the amp modded.

He will then send you a form that will have the mods you talked about, and have you list your equipment, cabs, speakers, guitars, pickups..... This way he has an idea of what your using. (My main guitars are Les Paul Standards, a 1996 and a 2004 both loaded with Bare Knuckles Black Dog pickups).

At the end of the form is a section for notes...... I put down that I was looking for the tone heard on AC/DCs Night Prowler intro so he had an idea of what my expectations were. In total Trace fashion, he let me know that I was actually hearing 2 guitars with two different amps, one more distorted (Angus) and one cleaner with nice highs (Malcolm). It still gave him an idea of what I was after.

Once I sent in the amp, Trace and I talked on the phone a few more times, as well as he emailed me with ideas, and told me what he was hearing in the amp. We then discussed power tubes, and pre amp tubes to try and dial in the exact sound I was after.

Important Note:
We all know how OCD guitar players are, and we can get stuck in the "I USE THIS ONLY".... I'm guilty as much as anyone, but remember the guy modding your amp has been around too, and be open to their suggestions. I say this because I had a favorite power tube that I use in my other Voodoo V-plex, but when Trace put it in this one, with the changes he did, the tubes I like had TOO MUCH of what I was after (bottom) and he suggested a different tube because my choice was too much bottom and the wrong kind of bottom (muddy). I took his advise, since he is trying to give me what I'm asking for, and I'm glad I did. His choice better matched the mod, and gave me exactly what I was after.

Here is a section from one of the emails.

Bill;

"I spent most of the day yesterday and all morning making some fine line tweaks based on the AC/DC Night Prowler song you referenced.

AC/DC Night Prowler Tone - When you listen to the studio version the guitar tone is great (truly) - however - there are (2) different guitar tones creating what you are hearing. Combined they sound great.

I tried to morph both tones together into the Treble channel going by the guitar/pickups you have, speaker cabinet, speakers, etc. I would recommend starting off by plugging into the Treble channel only to start with. Set the Preamp/Gain control full up/wide open. Set Treble, Mids, Presence to 12:00 and set the Bass EQ at 10:00. Raise up the Master and play. This should be a good starting point."

So now jump to when I got my amp back....... I plugged it in, set the knobs where Trace said to start, made a few adjustments, and was totally BLOWN AWAY! Exactly what I was looking for. From when I sent in the amp to when it was back was 12 days..... Pretty quick in my book.

If your thinking about having your amp tweaked or fully Modded, give Trace a call. I couldnt ask for a more professional experience in having an amp modded.

Here is my amp rig:

Awesome! Trace seems like a really great guy who's dedicated to his profession and helping the customer get what they want. Was thinking about sending in my amp to get his Dr. Feelgood mod, as Mick Mars probably has my favorite recorded tone ever. This definitely has me thinking about pulling the trigger!

Nice rig and good story! Are you still using - after the mastervol. mod - the Rivera attenuator to squeeze out the juice at low volumes?

Thaks guys,
Right now I use the Rivera Rock Crusher for the 1959 100 watt SLP. I'm gonna have Trace mod that Marshall too.  Remember, you need to know what you want first, and get that info to him.  When you talk to him,  he'll give you the best options. to get you where you want to be.

The first few times we talked, he had me try stuff on my rig to improve my sound. He has no problem giving out free advise. As busy as he is, he still treats you like "your his only customer".. Couldn't ask for a better company to have work on my gear.  The important thing is, when you talk to him about your gear, take notes as you talk. He is full of tips to improve your tone without modding your amp. Not too many companies I can say that about.

We improved my gear (speakers, cabs, tubes, pickups, cords) without modding first, and then when I was at the point where the amp needed to be tweaked, we did that. I would say, if you know what your after, and can voice that to him, you'll have a great experience like I did. Don't forget, he can't turn you into something your not, but if your at the point where you need your amp tweaked it doesn't get any better then working with Trace.

Give him a call, and talk to him. As busy as he is, he's very passionate about  tone, and he is willing to spend the time talking to you in detail, to get an idea of what your after. I've thought about having the DR Feel good mod done on my 100 watt SLP.

Actually I'm using the Rivera on my 1959 SLP 100 watt Marshall. The two Voodoo's are my main amps.  I use a plexiglass baffle in front of the bottom cabs to keep the front rows from being blasted out.

The band I'm in The Royal Pains, plays pretty loud, so the plexiglass works better for me. We do a lot of AC/DC and Aerosmith. Here is a clip of us live:

Its the Rivera Rock Crusher attenuator. It allows you turn up a non master volume amp, and then bring down the volume. Its the first one I've used, that doesn't drastically change your tone. Paul makes great stuff. He modded my Marshall amps in the early 80s and I played his first Rivera amps, the TBR-1 back in the late 80s.....

I imagine you can move some air with that. The last time I saw these plexi baffles was at a concert of the bluesrockband The Hoax. The guitarists have the SRV-sounds at ridiculous volumes. Can't remember what amps they were using at that time.

Does your tone and overall volume really benefit from the baffle?

I like to be able to feel it, so by having the guitars a little louder, I can do that. It also allows me to play more dynamically.... Tone wise, it takes a while to get it in the right position. I put it in a W shape, and pull it away from the speakers at least 2-3 feet. I can then angle it so I can hear it, but it doesn't blast out the other guys in the band.

Exactly...... I can really get it to thump, without blasting out everyone in line with my cab..... Our other guitar player tried one, but couldn't get use to it. It works great for me. Put it in a W shape so you don't get weird out of phase things happening with the sound bouncing off the plexi, and then hitting the speakers. I keep it 2 -3 feet away from the cab, and angle it so its open by me, but keeps the sound from blasting the other guys in the band.

I actually got it from Guitar Center. It was around $70 ..... Cheap enough that it was gonna cost me more to make it myself so I bought the pre made one. Its nice because the hinges allow it to fold up real small..

This is the company that makes them. http://www.clearsonic.com/amp_isolation.htm

Mine is 4 sections of 12" x 24" . It covers all of the bottom speakers, and most of the top of my bottom 4 x 12. This way its not completely isolated.
