NGD - Pointy Korina lovliness
« on: January 10, 2013, 01:10:49 AM »
Our regular Korina flying V fanatic customer, Paul has had us at it again
Really happy with this one!
Paul supplied some of his own hardware  (tuners, tonepro ABR style bridge and the pickups , which were Alnico 2, but sadly not Stormy Mondays - which would have been my first choice)

As ever we had to have a brass boomerang tailpiece made up specially as the commercially available ones are the wrong angle and they leave gaps down the edge of the fingerboard.

Paul had us put another serial number on this one - previous  versions featured his date of birth and the date of the first flyingV to be made.
This one just reflected a date that might have been a good time to get such a guitar.

Recessing and installing the gripper strip is a tricky task but we seem to do a nice job of that

We used 2mm mother of pearl dots on the side markers

The earliest Vs were hand carved on the heel - and as such had no step between neck and body - as repeated here (Paul is a stickler for the little details)

We were really pleased with the colour of the amber tint in the finish - looks like an old one might look  colour -wise

The neck wood has some lovely rippled figuring in it - looks lovely

The strings are seated in recessed brass cups - different style to Fender style ferrules

Love it to bits!  :D

I presume that's the one which has been in the "on the bench" section of your website for a while?

That first V design was definitely the best.  Inspired choice of korina as the timber, and I think the neck joint is a thing of sheer beauty.

Great looking guitar and I'm usually not that fond of Vs, but this one is delicious  :)

I've never tried a real 50s one so it's hard for me to say, but definitely they are special.

I think they look nicer with the black pickguard, but white is fine. Naturally this particular one is gorgeous.

I can never decide about that.  I sometimes think the black looks better, but I really like the contrast between the white scratchplate and the black knobs and mounting rings.... so maybe the white just edges it for me.

Absolutely beautiful work as always. I do like a classic V and one executed to this standard is a rare treat indeed. Very tasty.

And I can never decide whether black or white scratchplates look best on them either.

The contrast with the white pickguard is particularly nice if the pickups have had the covers removed, which gives the guitar a nice shot of a aggression. Would both black pickguard and uncovered pickups be too much?

Jonathan: whats the damage on one of these then?

As always stunning work. If I ever get a V it needs to be in this style, it just feels to right!

Has to be one of the tastiest looking V's I've ever seen. Gotta give us more info on that Explorer you had on your Facebook page too!

BTW, what's the point of the grip strip? I've only ever seen people (like me) put picks there.
