Dark sounding sg
« on: January 10, 2013, 09:29:24 PM »
Recently stuck a pair of mules Into my sg special along with the 500k pots and upgraded caps but it still sounds slightly too dark for my taste. I can't do anything about at the amp as I'm using an orange tiny terror an I've it the tone knob all the way to the right which is the brightest setting. It also has a tendency to sound a little bit muddy when playing chords with distortion

Any suggestions?

whoa
if mules are still too dark and not clear enough, the next step would be riff raffs
SGs can be a pain in the ass to match pickups
also, the tiny terror, as most el84 small amps, tends to mud the mids up under heavy gain
there's the jet city jca20, which I find to be a little more open sounding than the tiny terror (and costs half of an orange)
the riff raffs will help, but won't solve this
a bigger 40w-60w amp with 6l6/el34 tubes and a brighter voicing wouldn't require new pickups, unless your SG is REALLY dark sounding
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Yea I did think about a riff raff. The neck is ok for me, I only use it clean.
It's not really dark, it sounds nice it's just a tad too dark for me. Have been thinking about a mq p90 in the bridge too....

never played a MQ, but from clips, it doesn't sound brighter than a riff raff
more of a spanky middy tone

You could also see if you wonŽt throw some brighter tubes in the TT. Tube changes are not for everyone, but personally like to do it in most cases. I tried several combination with my TT and now have arrived at a combo that works very well with my cab and the general way I want it to react to my guitars and pedals.
It does still sound like an Orange and IŽll gladly play with a stock TT any day, but this way I like it even more when used with my gear.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I can imagine a big lump of mahogany + Mules -> midvoiced Orange TT is not optimal. I agree with Eric that brighter pickups like RiffRaffs or Cold Sweats will improve things, but that more open sounding amp could be part of the solutions.
( I own an Orange Rockerverb 50 head/cab and though my Mules-loaded Saint Blues sounds nice trough it, imho the amp feels at it best with singlecoils. Especially a tele is a good match for the Rockerverb-voicing.)
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Haven't played Mules or Riff Raffs but I also would look more to the amp as the potential problem here.

Cheers Stephan

Riff Raff for sure. Not sure a P90 will help brighten things up?

The obvious one is the Riff Raff.
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus
