abraxas set finally on its way.
« on: January 13, 2013, 08:11:36 PM »
at last i've got the cash together and ordered my abraxas set in raw nickel. i've been hankering for a set of these for ages. i was gonna put them in my axis ss but i've recently traded that for another les paul.
now i have to decide wether to put them in the new LP standard or take the wcr filmores out of my  LP custom and put em in that. i can see an experimental phase on the horizon. should be fun though!

They've been really good actually. I've had them in the custom for 2 years now and I've been using it for slide. They are very open sounding but a little on the dark side. Not sure what they would compare to in b.k. Range. I was comparing them today with the mule and stormy Monday combo in my 335. The mule is definitely brighter and punchier with more mid range which for normal playing I think I'd prefer the mule. But for slide stuff the filmores win hands down. I think that bit of darkness lends itself well to slide, well my slide playing anyway. The other plus for them is they stay crystal clear when rolling off the volume. Will be interesting to see how they compare to the Abraxas set as they are similar resistances. Although the filmores are Alnico V.

I had the Fillmores at one time, too. They have a very strong midrange as most of the WCR pickups (e.g. Darkburst, G-Wood and the Herc, which is no longer in production). I agree that they excel at slide playing and the Duane Allman tone but IMHO they are not as versatile as other pickups I had in the same guitar. The bridge pickup is quite close to the Rio Grande BBQ, although it is a tad brighter. tGoing by specs the Rebel Yell and the Crawler would probably be the closest in the BKP range, the Crawler probably closer in terms of tone since it also has strong midrange but it has more bass and treble.

Cheers Stephan

I did buy them with the intention of trying to get a Duane sound going on, But I think I also need to grow some enormous sideboards to really nail that tone.
