Good tubeamp 20-40 watts, good cleans and drive
« on: January 16, 2013, 01:09:15 AM »
Since my Rockerverb sounds best with a lot of volume, I'm thinking about purchasing a good (preferable smaller) tubeamp  that has a great cleanchannel with enough headroom for gigs  (play a lot of cleans) and a good drivechannel. Should go to (classic) rock. I prefer two independent channels and I like vintagevibe more then contemporary sounds. I prefer a headversion. It should perform well on low volumes.

This time no Orange, I have the RV and want tonally something different too. I'm looking at the Bogner Shiva, but I don't know how good it is on low volumes. Also looking at the Hook R40, but the cleanchannel might distort to early with humbuckers, and the ''cheaper'' Two Rock amps (are they any good?). Maybe the Renegade 65 is not bad either. Any good (cheaper) ideas?

i think thomann still sells the traynor ycv50b for around £450. Might be worth considering. Not as good as a bogner shiva, but not 4 times worse either (as the prices would suggest, though obviously diminishing returns apply with all expensive gear, not just bogner, and something which is 10% better for twice the price may still be worth it if that's what you need).

I've only tried the 40 watter, which seems to be almost exactly the same, aside from a different (worse) speaker, 6L6 power tubes and a slight circuit tweak to accomodate the 6L6es. It seemed pretty nice when i tried it.

Bogner Goldfinger would suit you down to the ground.

I like that one a lot. It just not so easy to dial in, but has great features. Will see if I can test one.
Btw 20-40 watts is approx. I don't mind if it is 80 watts, as long as it sounds great on low volume, but has the balls to keep up with the band on larger venues.

Not really a Marshall fan, except from the old Plexi's, but those are not the tools you take on stage in a sevenheaded coverband with lots of different styles.

Since you mentioned you don't mind going over the 40w mark, might I suggest a Peavey Classic 50? I've been GASing for one for ages. Awesome cleans, and great crunch. If you want that little bit more in the way of distortion, it reacts really well to a good overdrive.

The Egnater Tweaker 40 seems to me to be a good option. It has two channels and lots of tone shaping options and ss you stated yourself the Renegade 65 could be a possibility as well.

I had the Peavey Classic 4x10. Cleans are great, drive is good, but less dynamic then the clean channel. The problem with nice amp is the shared eq that has to be adjusted when you change channels. At least my experience. For the money a nice amp though.

How the Tweaker compares to the Renegade? I like the Renegade.

I haven't had the chance to play any of the two amps as there's no dealers who stock them close to me. From the sound clips I've heard both sound great, but you should be able to geat a varity of tones with the Tweaker which doesn't really come as a surprise I guess  :)

There's a forum member, can't remember who, that got himself a Renegade some time ago. I think he was very pleased with it. Here's the thread

Anyway, thanks bro, bec I already forgot about the classics and they offer a lot of amp for the dough.
