BKP's in a custom built LP
« on: January 17, 2013, 07:00:13 PM »
Hey guys, it's been a while!

Posted last year about an incoming Holydiver set that was going into a new LP I was having built.

Wanted to stop by and say thanks for all the help and show them off....these pups are the best I've ever heard in a guitar, and I'm gonna order some more in the future....about 2 weeks from now I'm getting a H/S/S of a Mule and some Irish Tours for a strat project...hope they sound as good as these do.

Anyway, pics:

I think they look great in there too. Anyway, thanks again and I'll be back with the strat project soon!

Looks great man! Btw, maybe you want to have look at some other BKP's that perform well as a bridgepickup in a strat. The Mule (I have one in a mahogany bolt-on guitar) could be a bit bright for alder or ash. I have paired a Crawler with two Irish Tours in my swampashstrat. It's a sort of Ubermule, with some PAF-pedigree. The Crawler beafs up a bolt-on thanks to the extra mids and the round but not dull or muffled topend. This one splits great thanks to the higher ouput. You get a great Fenderish quack on the fourth position.  An alternative would be the Abraxas (as the Mule also alnico IV, but a hotrodded version with bit more chime and less mids then the Crawler).

Hey thanks man......however, it's a beater Peavey Predator strat copy made of Poplar....would you make the same recommendations for that wood? I talked to Ben French earlier today, and he recommended the Irish Tours and the VHII, but I thought the VHII was a bit too lively in the vid/sound samples he sent, so he suggested the Mule and I dug it....I'll check your recommendations if you think they'd sound good in Poplar. Much appreciated, sir!

Thanks a lot Richard....this was built by a guy named Daniel Short, out of Canada. Would you believe this is only the 3rd guitar he's ever done? Here are his 1st and 2nd builds, respectively....1st one is his, and the 2nd was built for his brother.

I wanted something different, and I've had a vision of this guitar in my head for years. I approached Gibson about doing it, but they said no to the black binding on the body and neck, and no to using any other pups than their own, plus they wanted over 5k to do it. :? So I went this route, and I'm happy I did...got exactly what I wanted, and got to help out a brother doing it.

Is that one of Dan's guitars?

Hey allstar, long time no see! Yeah, this is the one I was telling you about last year....did you think any more about him building you one?

Those are his first three guitars ? Incredible !! How did he acquire the skills to build a Les Paul for his first guitar ? What amps/effects do you put it through ? What music do you play ? I think we're now going to find out you're a terrific guitarist who started playing three months ago.

Yup, first 3 guitars. I think it's pretty incredible too....his brother has been a buddy of mine for awhile, and when he told me he was building guitars, I couldn't believe it. Then I saw the first one done, and immediately paid him to get in line for #3.

As far as skills, he did about a solid year of research before he attempted anything on his first one, and then just went really slow so as not to mess anything up he couldn't fix.....good templates and patience took him a long way, he told me.

Far as amps and effects, I'm pretty simple anymore....tried a POD HD500 and it was fun for awhile....tried an AxeFx; same thing....I'm just not a tweaker, really. More of a set it and forget it kind of guy, so atm all I'm using is guitar>JC wah>amp, which is a 6505+ into an Orange 2x12 at home...some other stuff at a jam spot some buddies and I use; couple Marshalls and a Diezel VH4. I have a YJM100 coming sometime in the next couple weeks though...excited for Plexi tones at bedroom volumes. Only other thing I might use is a distortion pedal for a different flavor once in a while.

What I play varies on my mood, as I'm sure it does for you....Pantera/Slayer/Anthrax are always favorites, sludge/doom is finding it's way into the list thanks to input from a friend....Satriani/Santana type licks are fun too.....I try and think outside the box some, as I tend to get bored doing the same runs and stuff. Devin Townsend is always fun to play....I keep a guitar tuned to open C around the house just for that stuff and a band called New Way Home is inspiring me a lot lately; I really dig these guys. Different stuff out of NZ. Check this out:

As far as being a monster player that just started playing 3 months ago? Nope....matter of fact, I think I suck.....been playing off and on for about 10 years, but I own my own business and have a wife and kid:

so other things take priority over guitar a lot of the time. That pic is about 4 years old.....my daughter is 13 now and I have more beard and less hair :x

I've seen short guitars on youtube and all the build process on photos
that's an absolutely amazing work, specially considering they were his first guitars
I'd definitely order my own custom les pauls from him if I could afford those! (even though they aren't expensive at all and much much cheaper than a custom shop gibson)
maybe someday  :D

Might be sooner than you think, man. He takes payments, and it cost less than my Gibson Custom Classic. Did you find him on YT or are you over at MLP or the DF forums too?

Wow, those are stunning looking guitars...especially for someone with so little experience. You are a lucky guy! Wife and family AND such an axe (with BKPs even)? Can hardly get much better!
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Poplar has a lighter tone then mahogany. Btw, if you like the VHII, I can testify it's great too in a strat, just  different (voiced) then a Crawler. The VHII has a good balance, dense midrange and a clear topend, but not brittle. The VHII sounds hot, this one has quite a bit more output then a Mule to my ears. I have one a in ash strat, paired with two Mother's Milk. It's a bit dry and noncompressed, touchsensitive pickup that sounds great with some and a lot of gain (this one screams when dig in). Cleans are also very good, with a singlecoil-quality when you turn the volumepot down. It's not as beefy as the Crawler in my swampashstrat and the splitted sound is a little less in balance then the Crawler/IT's-set.

Good enough.....I know you guys have a lot more experience with BKPs than I do. I'll take your word for it and order the VHII as well.....see how they compare, although from the above description, the Crawler sounds good too....this guitar would only be for at home jams, unless it ends up spectacular.....think along the lines of Devin Townsend and David Gilmour...be nice to have something heavy in the bridge while maintaining that crystal clean beautiful strat neck tone for leads.

Thanks, man!
