Went to see a man about a Guitar today
« on: January 17, 2013, 07:17:11 PM »
Got the day off, so jumped in the car and went to see Dylan up in Brizzle in the Daemoness workshop.

It's going to be tight, but I may be able to eke enough into a savings account over the next few months to put down a deposit. ^_^

So stoked that this might actually be happening! Was trying not to get my hopes up earlier this month but it's looking more and more like I might be able to save the funds and have myself a custom!

Specs I'm thinking about:

Body: Swamp Ash.
Body Shape: Torn between Cimmerian or having Dylan come up with a Les Paul type shape, but Daemoness-ised.
Neck: Korina and Walnut (or maybe Rock Maple, not decided) 5 piece laminate.
Neck Finish: Satin
Fret Board: Ebony.
Scale Length: 27".
Hardtail bridge, most likely a Hipshot, hopefully with selectable Piezo if it's an option.
Aftermath Bridge, Cold Sweat Neck (CS with coil tap option).

Body Finish: Not sure yet. Seeing as I'm going custom, I'm wondering if I should go the whole hog and have a really thin Quilt Maple laminate and do something like a trans green to solid black burst, or just go for a simple solid colour all over. It will depend on the difference of price between the two options, but leaning more towards "This is only going to happen once in my lifetime so go for the works!"
Hardware colour, again, depends on the finish I go for. Either Gold, Black or Brushed Aluminium / Steel effect stuff.
If I go for the green burst option, then black and maybe Zebra open-pole pups.

So many things to think about!

So my 2c on this: with a 27" scale I'd go for a more warm tonal basis. Less bass and highs, more mids.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I'm going for a spec that's similar to some already existing Daemoness Cimmerian guitars, as I REALLY like what I have heard from a certain combination of timbers. Whilst I don't play (and don't intend to play) technical progressive metal a-la Periphery and Red Seas Fire, I really do love the tones that those guys use. It's just that since the scene has already been massively over-saturated with kids using that "djent" technique (and far better than I could anyway) I have already out-grown and gotten bored of that particular muting style. But, like I say, the actual tone of the wood combinations they tend to go for really appeals to me, so that's why I chose those woods.

I already own a 27" scale guitar that is mahogany bodied with a maple and walnut neck-thru design, so I know that if I ordered a combination that had that "warm" (or similar) quality I wouldn't be happy with the sound and it wouldn't do what I really want it to. I think the combination of a Swamp Ash body and some Korina in the neck construction will give me just the right amount of mids that I'm after, with a nice snappy attack (of course added to by the ebony board). I want the guitar to "chime" rather than "hum", if you get me, heh.

I think that's the way you've got to go, unless of course you genuinely want something which just happens to be the cheaper option.  :D

Sounds an exciting project, I hope you keep us up to date with lots of photos!  I remember Nolly had many pics of his Daemoness build, I don't know whether that was Dylan himself keeping a running record?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Not sure, but if I was as talented as Dylan I would be taking pics all the time of my works in progress, hah! The man is a true artist.
