Hello everyone, new member here.
Just a quick introduction and rundown of my initial experience with my new Bare Knuckle pickups....
I'm the proud owner of a 2008 '59 Les Paul Reissue and I've always had it in my mind that I'd change the pickups someday, I'd even researched BKP's so I already had a pretty good idea of what the vintage/vintage hot selection had to offer....as it was the guitar sounded great and that idea slowly got put on the back burner for a few years until I came upon a nice used set of used BKP's the other day, a Black Dog Bridge and a Stormy Monday Neck. I'd always wanted a bit more grunt on the bridge and something with a bit more vintage character in the neck so I thought the combo would be a winner!
Well, I got round to putting them in today and all I can say is why didn't I do this sooner?!
Black Dog Thoughts
Exactly what I wanted. Clearer than the Burstbucker it replaced and what seems like an increased frequency response right across the board, especially in the mids! It doesn't ever get honky or nasally but it just adds this weight and presence to every note and chords sound HUGE with no looseness in the bottom end. It still retains a very PAF character but with more muscle and girth. Very pleased with the swap.
Stormy Monday Thoughts
Again, exactly what I was hoping for. This pickup is SUPER glassy, lovely sweet top end and a nice spongy bottom end (still clear), the low output means it cleans up incredibly well and it seems like there's a very slight scoop in the mids which I think is where the glassiness comes from. It has a very woody rasp to it as well, vintage character in spades! I've also noticed with both pickups that they're far more touch responsive too.
Anyway, that's my initial thoughts on these humbuckers. I'm very glad I made the change and only disappointed that I didn't do it sooner!
