Pickups for Mahogany
« on: January 26, 2013, 08:31:42 AM »
Hello,
i am getting some guitars upgraded and decided to try Bareknuckles instead Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio. However as changing pickups/trying is somthing not easy to perform, i would like to have some opinions/experience from other forum members.

Will a Nailbomb/Stockholm (B/N) be a too dark combination? I am looking for pickups that can deal weel with a lot of effects over and distortion, but also with good cleans?
I've though about this combination basically because it seems the guy from Muse use it somehow on his guitars, however i doubt that his guitars are mahogany.

Basically the candidates to get this are a les paul clone and a Ibanez FR320 (both mahogany)!!!!

Thanks in advance

I have RYs in an all mahogany Firebird and they would probably fit your description. Great overdriven and clean. Depends on amps.
PRS Bernie Marsden Abraxas set
PRS S2 Singlecut RY's
JV Strat  IT Bridge
Gibson SG JB bridge
Fender Mex Tele Thinline TV Jones Classics
Fender Bassbreaker 15
Yamaha THR 100 Dual
Quilter Aviator Cub

I'll be playing... for now.. in a Pod HD500 directly to the computer (recording), and with band mates we rent a studio where mainly they have marshall valve amps (various models).

Musics played are mainly around Muse, Guns N'Roses, U2, Metallica, Jimi Hendrix... it's really a very mixed thing!!!

I once was recommended with an Abraxas set for the Les Paul (Vintage V100 AFD), so i either will go with those for the Les Paul, or the Nailbomb+P90Humbucker Stockholm for the Ibanez FR (this one i am about to buy)!!!

i know... it sounds i am looking for the hollygrail of the versatility!!!!!

IMHO you should get a better amp/guitar combination, before to buy a pickups like BK. Just my opinion! ;)

No pickups on planet Earth can help your tone if you play through Line6 "modeling" processors..

I agree a POD can take a lot of the dynamics out, but pickups still can make a lot of difference
misha mansoor (bulb) started all the periphery career by posting POD clips on the web
and that was a much older version and quite less realistic than the hd500 tones
I would never trade my amps for any sort of simulators, but BKP official clips on the new site are proof the good modelers still will let your pickups speak

The Ceramic Cold Sweat works well with Mahogany.

What sort of Marshalls do you have available at your rehearsal studio ? Are you looking to be gigging any time soon ?

Some Marshall (i think) Mosfet something (horrible)
JCM800
DSL2000 (i think)
Also some Tiny Terrors

Honestly i just play for fun with some friends, what realy bugs me is that with a strat i have with Seymour Duncan Everything Axe Set i can deal with effects, but the pickups/guitar lacks the "punch" of the humbuckers of the les Paul clone. With the Les Paul i got a better fat rock tone (not so thin) but with effects the sound is somehow "confusing"...

I could by a more expensive... but it will be wasting money as most of the guitars until 1000 need pickups/electronics replacement (besides tuners)!!
I understand (and know) that i valve amp could improve the dynamics and response (and tone overall), nevertheless i will be spending money in something that weights around 25 to 35 Kg to take every week to the rehearsal room for fun.. i live in a flat and have young kids... an amp will be there for the dust most of the time!!!

Probably what i look for doesn't exist.... i just want Fat Rock Tone, able to deal with lot of effects (and doesn't get muddy with distortion)!!!!

My guitars have "nice wood" this has been verified by Professional Musics, no need to buy another guitar, it's useless (unless i go for custom shop stuff which is impossible for me)

So back to track.... :)  which ones would you recommend?
