Talk to me about Kemper Profilers
« on: January 27, 2013, 08:12:00 PM »
Eyup guys,

So with this whole "two full-time jobs" malarkey, I am making some decent progress in flattening my credit card bills and other debts. I approximate that in about 2.5 years I will be debt-free, and will be celebrating by purchasing some new gear.

Some serious consideration needs to go into this, as whilst I will have a little money saved up for that glorious day, I don't want to go overboard. My situation is this:
I record at home, a lot. I currently use a PodXT, but as we all know, they don't quite cut it. I am building some isolation and sound-proofing solutions for recording live guitars and vocals etc in the mean time.
I want true "Tube" tones, but can only afford one amp to do this with.

So how good is the Kemper? I have seen a lot of YouTube vids A/Bing it and I can't tell the difference between the profiler and the amps it is profiling. Do you really get that sense of playing a tube amp through it? I'd really like to hear the opinions of Kemper owners, but it's really looking like the way to go.

I've seen it has a "tube shape" knob, anyone know how this colours the sound?

For the price, it seems like a much better option than, say, an Axe FX, by miles.

Also, are you able to turn off the cab part of the signal so that you can plug it into a real cab in a live gig situation?

In the next couple of years I will be making a select few "once in a lifetime" purchases, one of which will be my Daemoness custom guitar, the next will be some kind of uber-awesome recording amp. It's looking, so far, like the latter will be a Kemper, but need a lot more knowledge and opinions from owners / testers before I commit to a buy. Like I said, it'll be "once in a lifetime", so it needs to be the Daddy of amps / amp solutions. ^_^

GO!

I got to finally try a kemper recently.

Soundwise it was stunning. In a recording environment it would be indistinguishable.

However the one part that really let me down was the face that in the room it really doesn't sound that similar at all and it has virtually no feel.

I should have expected the latter part really as i've found it with every modeller.

But purely for recording purposes i don't think it can be beat. For further reference listen to testaments last album!

Yeah a lot of the vids I've seen, people keep saying they don't get the tube "feel", which is what I would have expected anyway. Does it feedback like a tube amp, though, do you know? I love to play around with feedback, but I'm guessing you'd only get that with the version of the Kemper which has the power-amp section included?

Nice one dude! So many things to think about with amps. I want to start actually building a small collection. Namely a Classic 50, Fryette Pittbull and a SLO Clone. I think I will be happy with that. I've been watching more and more vids on the Kemper, and whilst it's an awesome studio tool, I'm thinking I'd prefer the "feel" of a real tube amp. It just sounds like whilst it sounds amazing, playing it might either get boring or make a player feel like there's just that "something missing" feeling.

Lots and lots of things to consider, here.  :?

I think that it could feel & sound a lot better in the room through a power amp and cab rather than hooked up to powered monitors how i tried it.

Heck even a pod can feel good through a marshall PA when tweaked correctly.

Have you looked into the eleven rack? They're also pretty good and cheaper but again they have that modeller feel. But i think that is going to be hard to avoid in the digital realm.

Wouldn't it be more of an idea to get better at recording/mixing/mastering before throwing money at gear?

Personally I think drum sounds are a more important than guitar sounds in terms of a mix, good sounding drums with mediocre guitar is going to sound better than mediocre drums with good guitar. ie St Anger

Heard plenty of really polished recording with pods, ye it's more work to get them to sound right but anyone can take good gear and make it sound bad. As you play metal, there's some really good free plugins out there now like tse x30, put that with a nice cab impulse or the marshall ones that is free on the redwirez site and I'm sure you could get an awesome sound.

Indeed, unfortunately I've squeezed all the potential I can out of my Pod and need something "tubey".

Like I said before, I have some soundproofing things in the works and I'm borrowing my mates tube amps to start recording those live, probably with an attenuator too. It's unfortunate that magic doesn't exist, otherwise we could all hybrid the versatility and convenience of the Kemper with the feel of a tube amp.
