Pickup suggestion for Signtature str1-hb
« on: February 08, 2013, 06:59:48 PM »
Hi

I recently bought a used Signature str1-hb guitar and at the moment the stock pickups are a little lacking in the gain department.
My musical tastes include the Sex Pistols, Def Leppard, Nirvana etc so I am looking for suggestions on what bkp might be good for me.
I have my eye on the Rebel Yell set but would like opinions from experience users here before buying anything.

Thanks

Ps I have a Orange Tiny terror amp with Blackstar HT-Metal pedal

Hi

The Signature str1 is a bit of a rare thing but I have found the specs below from a website so I believe this is what my guitar is like.

Country of Manufacture    Japan
Year    2005
Construction    Set-Neck, Long Tennon
Body    2 Piece Mahogany Back with Maple Cap
Neck    Mahogany, 50s Profile (10.5" Radius)
Fingerboard    Indian Rosewood, Bound
No. of Frets    22 Medium
Scale    24 3/4"
Inlays    Block/Crown
Hardware    Nickel
Bridge    Tune-O-Matic
Tuners    Gotoh Vintage Style
Pickups    2 Gotoh Humbuckers
Pickguard    Creme
Finish    Honeyburst
Controls    2 x Volume, 2 x Tone, 3-way Toggle

Hope that helps with possible suggestions.

Thanks

RY is a good choice for those styles.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

RY is a good choice for those styles.

I have read quite a few posts from people happy with the Rebel Yell, just wondering if it will sound ok with my Str1.
From what I have read certain pickups are better suited to the wood that the guitar is made from. Just trying to get some feedback before I open my wallet  :D

Rebel Yells fit to the LP-specs of your guitar. RY's can be a tad bright in ash and alder, but in mahogany they can be absolute fav. The height with scatterwound pickups is important too. If you are after a a tamed topend look at the Diver.

Thanks for your thoughts.
Looks like the Rebel Yell could do the job for me so I will go to the store and sort out ordering and fitting of these.
My str1 guitar is well made but the stock pickups just go muddy when you start to turn the gain up for some rock so an upgrade of the pups is essential.

It's almost impossible to make RYs go muddy. Hope they work out for you.

Going to have a chat about the ry's at the guitar store tomorrow and more than likely place an order for them.
I will let you know how it works out.

Thanks

there's something about les pauls that make them really pickup-friendly, specially with BKP's
I'd say anything between VHII's and nailbombs should work for you
my personal suggestion would be emeralds, but if you feel the rebel yell is a favorite for your ears, go for it

send an e-mail to the BKP team as well, specifying you have a fine les paul, your amp and what you're intending to play
they know their stuff better than most people here, as they not only make the good stuff, but they're also players and get a lot of feedback from us customers

Hi

Thanks again for the suggestions.
I think I will indeed call the bkp team and get their thoughts on my needs before I take the plunge.
Will try and get a picture of my guitar on the site later but I have very limited internet access at the moment.

Cheers
