help ordering hss strat set
« on: February 12, 2013, 08:42:32 PM »
i'm about to pull the trigger on a hss set for my fender strat. i will be using the "suhr hss" wiring shown below. i just need to know what choices to make when ordering. i decided upon irish tours for the singles and a crawler for the humbucker. i believe i need 53mm spacing, short legs and 4 conductor wiring for the crawler. for the irish tours, will a RW/RP middle work with this wiring? and also should i choose vintage stagger or flat poles(my neck radius is 9.5")? another thing i read on this forum is that the phasing is different for singles and humbuckers, this is taken into account when ordering a hss set, but irish tours/crawler is not one of the sets offered as standard. hope you guys can help me with this as i can't wait to get this project finished.
cheers fellas.

I have a Crawler/IT-set in an swampash HSS-strat. Indeed 53 mm spacing. For this radius flat polepieces are the common choice. I have the RW/RP-middle sc. Mine has a push-pull for a split on the Crawler. Push down in the fourth position is full Crawler and middle-pickup.

The Suhr wiring diagram is different, with a bridgecoil and neck in position 3, when I understand well. A superswitch might help.

yes, i got a super switch already. as i understand the "suhr hss" wiring gives

1 - neck only - 250k volume, 250k tone, .047 tone cap
2 - neck + middle - 250k volume, 250k tone, .047 tone cap
3 - middle only - 250k volume, 250k tone, .047 tone cap
4 - middle + humbucker (auto coil-tap) - 250k volume, 250k tone, .047 tone cap
5 - humbucker only - 500k volume, 500k tone, .022 tone cap

I have a Warmoth strato with compound radius (10-16''). I have had flat poles, and now my new BK set have staggered pole. I prefer staggered set on low string, while on the high strings is it the same, no differences for me.

I had my VHII/Mother's Milk loaded Fender HSS wired like this diagram, with autocoilsplit on the fourth position. It's on the BKP website. I thought, but perhaps I'm wrong, the Suhr-wiring is different, with the bridgecoil and neckcoil coupled in position three.

there is a way to do that wiring but i believe the wiring plan i showed is for the selections i stated above. with a super switch you can get almost any combination you want. i would just like to know if RW/RP middle pickup would work with this and is there any phase issues i should be aware of before ordering.
with regards to staggered or flat profile, what difference does it make? the neck on my guitar is one-peice maple from a highway one fender strat, 9.5" radius i think.

It will work. My VHII/MM's loaded strat is wired like this and has RW/RP.
The staggered polepieces are usually used for a 7.25 radius fretboard in order to balance frequencies. They work on a 9.5 inch board too, if you like to have the mids enhanced.
