Need help with p-90 suggestions....
« on: February 13, 2013, 12:58:58 AM »
I need a little guidance/ help in making choices for installing p-90's in 2 of my guitars. I have 2 custom strat style guitars that I want to install these into. First up is my sloid mahogany,H/H strat with 1 volume and a 5 way selector. I want to install either the Nantucket or the Stockholm in the bridge of this one if possible to do so leaving my existing humbucker in. Second is my 2 piece alder strat currently with S/S/S setup 1 vol, 2 tone. I have Dimarzio area 58, 67 for the middle and neck positions of this guitar. I was looking to install the Supemassive 90 in this guitar. My questions are can these Bare Knuckle p-90 be installed in the 2 guitars as described and if so what mods will I need to do for this to work. If this isnt possible or there is a better scenario or set up that would be better than my proposed idea, please let me know as I know that the wiring/ pots, etc are a little different when doing this kind of combinations. Thanks in advance for your help.

On your HH guitar, the Stockholm is a simpler choice than the Nantucket, because the Stockholm will directly replace a humbucker but the Nantucket is P-90 shaped, so you'd need to modify the scratchplate (if there is one) and/or the body to fit it.  You'll lose some of the options on your five-way switch (coil splits or whatever) because the P-90s are single-coils.

On the SSS guitar, again you'd need to modify the body and/or scratchplate.  Also worth noting that the Supermassive won't be humcancelling like your Area 58 and Area 67.

As regards pots and wiring, P-90s are usually used with 500k pots although I believe vintage Gibson P-90 guitars often had a 500k volume and 250k tone.
