Advice for a P90 replacement
« on: February 15, 2013, 11:45:28 PM »
Hello,
I have a les paul studio 60's tribute. I love the sound of the neck pickup but I dislike the sound of the bridge pickup.
I want a sound with less treble and more power. I find the hum pretty annoying with a high level of distortion too.
I don't want a trash metal sound though. The "heaviest" tones I'd like are stuff like Deftones, QOTSA, RATM, Muse...
If you can help me don't hesitate!
Thanks and sorry for my bad English!

Supermassive for sure. I can't predict if you will get less hum. BKP's are high quality products, but P90's will always hum a bit.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

you should try shielding the pickup cavity with conductive copper tape, it will remove most of the hum. I've just done it on one of my guitars and it has removed all hum!

you should try the Pig 90 or supermassive, they would both suit your needs

Thanks for your answers!
The supermassive 90  looks great.
However don't you think a humbucker is more what I need?
But Bare Knuckle doesn't make p90-sized Humbuckers right?

That's right, just humbucker-sized P-90s.

BKP don't make any humbuckers which can directly replace P-90s.  Several other manufacturers do, but apart from DiMarzio they're mostly trying to make hum-cancelling pickups which still sound like P-90s.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

They only make humbucker-sized P90's.  :)
A lot of P90's sound as full as humbuckers and handle gain very well.
I had a Yamaha 503 Troy van Leeuwen-model with three p90's and that one did a proper rock.
I think the Supermassive lays a few pounds of gunfire on those Yamaha-pickups.
