Coheed's new albums
« on: February 17, 2013, 04:58:14 PM »
Anyone here listened to Ascension and Descesion yet? What do you think?

I only just started really listening to them last year, and I liked them. Decided to take a chance and buy the deluxe package of their new albums, and WOW.

Claudio's voice has really matured and while its still definitely high pitched, it's a lot smoother and easier to listen to, which is big for me. His vocals on the first few albums were just too high for me. But all in all, I'd have to say both the new albums have already snuck into my top 5 favorite albums. The songs are just on another level for me, especially the Key Entity tracks. Some of the best songs I've ever listened to IMO, fully developed and realized, great instrumental work, the melodies are killer, just an all around A+ piece of work.

Am a long time Coheed fan, first saw them in TJ's in Newport in 2003 I think, and saw them several times subsequently.  Was a huge fan when the first 2 albums came out, but after that they went downhill IMO.  Right up until Ascension/Descension.  Thought the first (Ascension) was pretty good - certainly the best thing since In Keeping Secrets. But the latest is superb!  Have listened to it a lot.  Feels like there is the emotion that has been lacking so much from a lot of their 'middle' albums.

Huge Coheed fan, seen them live in NYC many times.

My quick-and-dirty opinion (for what it's worth): Having Josh back in the band was a GIANT step in the right direction. NWfT would have been my favourite Coheed album (I still think it has Claudio's best songwriting, overall) was handicapped by a drummer forcing every song into 4/4. Hearing Josh's drums on Ascension, you know you're Home in the first 2 seconds. :)

YoBR was a GIANT letdown aside from one or two tracks. Penne was an awful fit with C&C and I was very disappointed in his drum solo in Final Cut live as well as his work on Neverender.

I was super-psyched after hearing Ascension. Unforunately, Descension really lags when it hits Iron Fist and track after it; it's more YotBR style MOR type of tracks, very repetitive, no solos ...

I've yet to hear Ascension and Descension as one piece, and I'm hoping that will clear up the murk a bit from those 2 tracks, but will not know until I do.

Can't wait to see them at Radio City next month!

NWFT has two killer tracks; the title track and Gunslingers. After that, everything has been quite trashy until Afterman.

I feel like Descension will be a grower. There are alot of poppy tracks, a la Blood Red Summer, Feathers, etc., and quite a few fillers. I like the idea that they went for the double album, but really they could have taken out a few filler songs and compressed this into one awesome album. Not really complaining though, just thinking out loud

Those Key Entity tracks really are special, I can see them being highlights of their career along with tracks like Welcome Home and IKS.

Just saw them last night with Between the Buried and Me, and Russian Circles. AWESOME show, couldn't get enough. Coheed is just in another world right now, they can really do no wrong. They pulled off the new stuff exactly like you hear on the record, along with the old stuff they obviously kill. Highly recommend seeing them if any of you guys get a chance!
