Home-build wiring query
« on: February 21, 2013, 11:06:35 PM »
Greetings,
Apologies for this being my first post, but I am nearing completion of my first home-build (except the finish) and would like a little advice on how to go about wiring up my guitar.
I have a pair of Abraxas with a volume and tone pot each. Instead of the usual 3-way toggle, I would like to use a rotary (5-way, 4-pole from StewMac) switch to give me the following options :
1-neck HB
2-neck SC
3-neck+bridge HB
4-neck+bridge SC, inbetweeny stratty sound
5-bridge HB

So, if anyone could either help me out with wiring advice, or point me in the direction of a suitable website (I have already tried GuitarElectronics) with a wiring schematic, then I would be extremely grateful.
Oh, pictures of nearly-completed guitar shall be posted too when ready :)

Cheers,
Adam

BKP, SD and DiM all have an extensive wiring schematics library online.

I really like guitarnuts.com. They also have a forum where many exotic wirings are discussed.

At any rate your configuration should be doable with a 5-way rotary but if it's a new guitar I would strongly consider a 5-way mega switch instead of a rotary - much easier to handle IMHO.

Cheers Stephan

Thanks Stephan,
I had looked through the BKP schematics already, and the closest is the PRS switching system. However, I am really too much of a beginner at wiring to adapt that particular diagram.
I shall, however, check through the other links you suggest, especially the guitarnuts website.
As far as the build goes, I have already purchased the rotary switch and routed the pocket for it (never again shall I make an electric from padauk - the amount of irritating, getting everywhere, staining wood dust is ridiculous with it. Looks nice though :) ), so I shall leave the megaswitch for a future build. I already have a set of Irish Tours for my next attempt (am thinking a uk timber hollowbody), so perhaps the twin-neck following that one :)

Thanks for the advice,
Adam
