Yamaha THR.. Any thoughts?

Weird looking piece of kit.. however, in my search for something portable, felxible with half-decent tones I found myself considering this. I read that some of the editorial staff at Guitarist actually used these so I figure they must be o.k.. Does anyone have any experience at all? I am particularly drawn to the 'C' black model.

I've got the original THR10, before they started introducing the more specialised black models etc.

Bought it partly as a practice amp and partly because the reviews said the speakers are great for playing mp3s through!

The FX are cool but quite limited in their range and flexibility (I haven't done anything clever like trying to use the bundled software), but as a practice amp it sounds pretty good.  Hardly amazing though, so I've been a little surprised by the degree of enthusiasm from the Guitarist staff.  I have to conclude the shortcomings are more down to me than the amp.  :|

Yeah the way the press talks about it seems like it's the next best thing since sliced bread. Never got that. Though it is decent, it's nothing too special.

No I do not have any experience with this. But I too think that it is not that special.

i have the thr10. i think it is a fantastic practice amp for home use, and it is just a practice amp. works well with an acoustic guitar too. jamming along with the ipod is perfect for learning new tunes. it can be quiet enough so as not to wake the kids up and just loud enough to piss the neighbours off.
i think the £250 price tag is a little on the high side but then i must say, i seem to be playing guitar more than ever since owning this. mine lives on the arm of the sofa so its ready to go all the time.
like anything though, its best to go and try before you buy!
if you do get one, don't turn on the noise suppressor which can be found in the editing software, it does weird, not nice things to the sound!

That's interesting!  I do find the unit a bit noisy and had been thinking - in the unlikely event that I ever get round to installing the software - that I might try out the noise suppression.  :lol:

it kind of makes things more noisy in scifi kind of way. bit hard to describe, i actually thought it was faulty so i phoned the shop to explain and the first thing the guy said was have you turned the noise suppressor on!

Have you found the software useful for anything else? (there's a version of Cubase or something as well, isn't there?)

the editing software is ok really. you can fine tune the effects and stuff and make your own sound settings and presets.
i installed the cubase, and err well ????

I had a very basic version of Cubase which came with my soundcard (I think) about 10+ years ago.  Never really got further than playing the little demo tune - no idea how to record and even less idea what to record.  :lol:

i had a vhs recorder once and had trouble recording on that too!
