just need some advice
« on: March 04, 2013, 10:57:00 AM »
Morning all. i'm after a new set of Pups for my solid mahogany esp FX.
its currently equipped with EMG's and I just dont like the sound they give out, its nice but not what im after.
ive been toying with the idea of painkillers or aftermath as the ESP is quite Bass heavy. any advice would be great of the Painkiller or aftermath. I play (surprisingly) thrash and death metal through a Randall V2 head and cab. im just not sure which one would sound better in my new axe is all. anyways thanks for your time  PDT_002

Hi

If your guitar is bass heavy then it would be best to go for the Painkillers as they are a brighter pickup. As you rightly said they will both handle thrash and death metal but the Painkillers will help you punch through that bass and give you more highs.

I just replaced the stock gibson 500t/496r set in my friends gibson '76 explorer with a cold sweat set
the sweats match the guitar pretty well, and they made a huge improvement over the bassy and muddy stock pickups, but I still think this particular guitar could use a little less bass and more upper mids, so maybe the painkiller could be a perfect match
the sweat works perfectly for 80's metallica, testament and early 90's pantera, though
