Ibanez RGD 7 Prestige needs some P-Ups
« on: March 04, 2013, 11:45:29 AM »
Got my RGD2127FX (Prestige) last week, not digging the stock pickups at all.

Body's basswood with a maple/wenge bolt-on neck, acoustically pretty even with a nice snap in the highs.
Musical style will be low-tuned death metal (not the melodic kind, mind you; think Bloodbath or Miseration). Tuning range B, Bb and A both drop and standard.

Got a set of Blackhawks in my baritone 6er (hella tight) and want the Ibanez to have a meatier sound with more girth in the mids (esp. lower mid area).
Thinking about Pigs or Miracle Man, but curious what you guys say.

GO !

The anemic tonal properties of most RGs benefit from fatter-sounding pickups with more weight behind single notes.
The Black Dog, Warpig and Aftermath should all compress the top end nicely enough to avoid it sounding thin. That would be my worry about the Miracle Man - it could sound thin on the treble strings and the super-thin RG neck will do nothing to counter that.

Personally I think the Black Dog would be perfect, but few players believe me when I say it can sound absolutely brutal.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Guess the added mass from the 7 neck will counter that a little,
but still wondering as both the Warpig and the M.Man are usuallythe go-to pickups for basswood...

anybody got experiences with any of those two in basswood 7s ?

I had a lot of luck with the miracle man in my RGD. But the aftermath was more balanced and a better match imho.

The miracle man sounded fantastic but the low end was a little too much but that could be exactly what you are looking for.
