Rebel Yells - Split Coils
« on: March 14, 2013, 01:50:50 PM »
I'm having some major work done on my Gibson Firebird Studio which is my main gigging guitar. Re-fret, new nut and I'm having push/pull coil splitters.

Does anyone have coil split options with Rebel Yells ? What sort of sounds can I expect ?  I'm particularly looking forward to splitting the neck because on the whole I prefer single coil neck pickups. Do they lose much output ?

I did, but I changed it back. I didn't notice that much of a difference. Had it in a LP so that has something to do with it, maybe it'd be more noticeable in the Firebird.

Got the guitar back today. I played it through the same old JTM45 I used yesterday and tried all the options offered by the coil splits. In my old SG I've got coil splitters with a JB in the bridge and an old Gibson pup in the neck. The JB splits to give a passable tele-ish sound but it sounds nothing like the JB in humbucker mode. The RYs when split sound like the same pickup with more pronounced single coil characteristics (obviously). What I'm trying to say is that the RY still sounds like an RY whereas the JB doesn't sound like a JB. Strange but true. Can't wait to try them through my own amp at gig volume.

Cool. I guess that's basically what I found!

There's a few songs in our set that could use a single coil sound but I hate changing guitars even though I have a nice Strat with an IT in the bridge. It feels a bit pretentious to me to change guitars when it's really only for my benefit because no-one in the audience is likely to notice much difference.

The RY is for sure hot enough for a good split. I use the coilsplit on the Crawler in my strat regularly.
